I think CP gambled on him signing a new one with a release and gentleman’s agreement but it’s badly backfired

Seemed fairly clear he was in a win-win situation, probably why he didn’t force the move. Just wait and get a free transfer to someone with a bonus and double the wages. Easy.

I wonder if like Lingard, Diego Carlos, Diaby, Maddison and perhaps even Szoboszlai we'll look back at not signing him as a bullet dodged.

It's important to recognise what difference we may have had on those players careers had they joined us.

Sometimes, it's certain players, at certain clubs, at certain times.

For example, if we do sign Guehi, there's a much better chance his career moves on to greater things. If he stays at Palace and they continue to have stinkers, he's going to suffer as a consequence.

What's for sure is that Palace are in a much worse negotiating position now. I'm not so sure we will revisit it though.

Him still there in the summer and palace relegated would be funny as fuck. Still think thry have too much about them though. Weird how their manager has dropped of a cliff though, he looked proper naughty coming in, with 2 players or so away from a very strong xi.  Olisie is a huge loss. No doubt sbout it.

I largely agree with you and I think that people can be far too binary about players being good or bad based on how a signing works out. Often it's way more about the atmosphere/setup of the club a player goes into that decides if they are a success, rather than their innate abilities. This was why I left out players like Ekitike, though he's also doing well at Frankfurt

Equally I do still feel we've been a tad lucky in some of our near misses.

If Krafth is out long term we’ll surely look to bring a CB in in January, I’m just not sure palace will sell given there league position.

I think they arguably have too much 'value' tied up in him in terms of their overall squad. If Riad returns from injury in December it might make sense for them to cash in and strengthen other positions.

Anyone think that we’ll still be interested in him January?  My guess is that they would ask for  45m+ or similar? I hope we don’t waste any time on him whatsoever.

One player that might be out of our reach (not impossible) depending on the competition. That’s Tomas Araujo. Not seen that many games but from what I’ve seen I really like the look of him. Would probably cost more than 45 from what I’ve read.

Can't imagine Palace wanting to sell him in January if they're still in a relagation battle, certainly not for less that we'd offered in the summer.

That said, I'd take our summer offer, divide it by his remaining contract months at the time, and offer an equivalent amount based on shorter contract, just because.

So, say 65 million with 22 months of his contract remaining = 2.95 million per month. Near the end of Jan that's 5 months less on the contract so about £15 million less. £50 million offer.

If they accept I'd then withdraw it and offer £45 million, then £40 etc.

I think the quality of the league is generally really high that losing a key player makes a huge difference.

Palmer is basically carrying Chelsea. It's not to say they're shit without him but take him away and suddenly they're probably mid table.

See also Rodri at Man City for a higher up the table example. Overwhelming favourites for the league before they lose him for the season.

Makes the job Howe did with most of our first XI out last season all the more impressive imo.

Got a sneaky feeling we might go back for Tapsoba (spelling).

Summer maybe. He's still got a while on his contract, Leverkusen look to be challenging for CL places and he's played every minute of every game so far. Would take a monumental offer in January I reckon.

We'll have Lascelles and Botman back soon after the window opens, our desperation from the summer has gone and Guehi has a lot less left on his contract. Can't imagine for one minute we go back in for him with any kind of big offer. Add in his deep in form too.

If we do make an offer it'll be a hell of a lot less than the last one. Shoe's on the other foot this time.
