I think the difference from last summer to this is Palace want / need to sell to stop him going on a free.  Which is probably the players preference as he'd then have the choice of clubs.

maybe they want to play him this weekend in the community shield, and then sell him. is it even clear if they play Conference or Europa league or still pending? does not seem they have much ambition to kick on after the FA cup success.

Starting 11 isn't the problem unfortunately. It's what's underneath.

 

Midfield is the biggest drop off when we pick up injuries. Wingers and full backs are well stocked. CB needs one more (like Guehi as you added) which means we have Botman burn or schar to rotate with Lascelles and krafth as emergency cover. Striker would need Wissa and Sesko to be sufficient cover.

So we need 2 midfielders (1 close to first team + maybe 1 younger development player) 

 

Then 2 strikers of any combination: 

Isak + Wissa/Sesko or Wissa + Sesko.

 

And atleast one CB.

Doubt that we are getting 2 CMs. Not as long as Willock stays put which he seems to be. Can't have too many changes during a window either.

Willock is completely unreliable now. Can't stay fit and even when he does he's not contributing anymore. 

 

Joelinton has had a serious injury on each of the last 2 seasons and also has has had suspensions due to yellow card accumulation. 

 

Add in the potential for considerable additional games and the impact fatigue has on performance levels. I believe not having adequate cover in midfield will be our biggest down fall this season (striker uncertainty not withstanding)

Palace want a fee now and don’t want him to run down his contract . Liverpool would rather pick him up on free next year. Player would probably rather wait for Liverpool. What happens if we bid £45m? Will Liverpool bid? Will the player join NUFC? Would be funny to force Liverpool to spend another 40/50m but if the player won’t move it’s pointless.

It’s a World Cup year. They can just threaten to put him in the reserves for a season if he doesn’t go to us (providing no one else slaps in a matching bid).

 

For whatever reason this looks like it has a deadline-day Levy lowball deal written all over it.

He didn't kick up any fuss at all to join us last summer when he could have easily done an Isak if he wanted to come. 

 

So he will happily do another season with Palace if he gets his desired move next summer and for likely much higher wages than we will be able to offer.

He'll wait until Palace accept an offer. Regardless of us ,Liverpool or whoever.

Irrelevant if we can't agree terms with the player. If we are offering £100k a week to join us now. But then if he waits a year he can start for his preferred choice, get a large signing on fee as a free transfer and possibly also get £200k a week or whatever. 

 

Us agreeing a few with Palace does nothing really other than give him a decision to make. But the power is still all with Guehi.

Not every player has to act like a complete wanker when they want a move away.  I don’t get the impression that he definitely wouldn’t have signed, just that the lad is actually a professional.

We would sound him out on wages etc before we bothered to put a bid down. If we bid I think we’d get him, unless us doing that sparks a bidding war.
