Newcastle United 1-0 Southampton (17/08/24)

Recommended Posts

We didn’t get going at all today and looked second best before Schar went off.

I thought we defended well with 10 men but it helped that Southampton didn’t have much variation to their attack, the worry was that we could not retain possession for any period of play to take pressure off ourselves, we were booting it down field and inviting wave after wave of attack which a better team would have punished us for.

Still, 3 points from a tricky start so on to the next one.

I loved that like. We were shit at the start but the red card turned it into an old fashioned siege, and what should've been a routine 3 points into proper fist pumping stuff. Appreciated the goal and save much more than in other recent wins. Joelinton <3

Not seen red back. My initial reaction (from the Leazes) was anger at Schar for being so stupid to give him that opportunity, but maybe I was being harsh.

(Did I see @Sifu walking up the stairs in the Leazes?)

I was indeed in the Leazes, L4?

Observations from the match but only seen it in real time.

Bruno is not captain material. Burn took on that role when it really mattered like shouting at the ref when he made fucking stupid decisions.

Red card looked very harsh. No contact and Diaz dived.

Gordon is playing within himself. The East Stand was really missed off with him today for what it's worth. Pulled out of loads of 50/50. Hopefully he's fully focused against once the window closes.

Ref was shit from the first minute

Maybe not in the vocal arguing with people sense, but his effort and determination to win for me is where he shines.

He sets the standard and the run to the last minute attitude.

We have a few captain worthy players iyam:thup:

Schär should have known better; as should Bruno, giving away a FK almost on the edge of our box. Too many emotions bubbling up there.

Ref was appalling!

Fabulous team effort defending, onwards and upwards....

I thought that FK was a calculated gamble by Bruno as they had no established FK specialists and setting up the FK took up valuable time. He wouldn’t have done it if Ward-Prowse was still there.

despite having our backs to the walls, not particularly playing well, and creating little, i still really enjoyed the game today.

I mean he did get sent off against them when they had Ward Prowse in the cup semi a few years ago for a daft challenge on the edge of the box

He has matured and wisened up massively since then. Remember how many yellows he was picking up in the beginning and how he went on a card free streak last season?

Soton had some good build up play, but had absolutely no quality in the final third.

They'll struggle.

Some of their passing in tight spaces was class, really impressive!

The lad that came on for them on the left was all fart and no shit and unfortunately, Armstrong is in the same pool as Dwight Gayle and Patrick Bamford - class in the championship, not quite good enough for the PL.

I can see them picking up a good few points though.

Second half was stressful it must be said but enjoyed the day overall!

Good result given the circumstances of the game and although I would've probably taken a point after the sending off I certainly wouldn't have done at half time after realising just how poor of a side they were. They really aren't a good side. Which makes the (limited sample of) performance of the first 25 minutes a bit more galling.

What did people think of Gordon's performance btw? Many around me thought he didn't look interested.

Him and Trippier joined pre-season super late. Wouldn't be surprised if he's just not match fit yet.

Think it’s harsh to say he didn’t look interested personally. Was definitely not himself and didn’t play well at all, but he hasn’t had a pre season.

Agree that they were shite despite keeping the ball (means nowt). Was also concerned at how poor we looked prior to the red card. No intensity or anything, was like night and day compared to Villa at home first game last season.
