While I think Eddie will get the best of him and will become super effective in time.  It’s fair to be critical of signing a winger that seems to have trouble trapping and controlling the football.

i also think it makes it harder to eventually sell them for decent money.

I have to say, his first touch has been the biggest letdown for me so far. I still believe it's more about him trying too hard, because I don’t recall him having the same ball control problems at Forest.

Same.  I refuse to believe it’s going to be this bad consistently and that’s how he’s always played.

It’s bad.  The fans will eventually groan at such bad fundamentals.

It just has to improve.

His take on stats suggest he’s not a master manipulator of the football but neither is Anthony Gordon. But Gordon’s first touch is consistently solid. That’s why despite being technically limited imo he doesn’t stand out negatively for England. His touch, general build up is solid.

Elanga’s touch can’t continue to be this bad. In general build up he’s been no better than Murphy, which is Murphy’s biggest weakness.

Elanga's crossing/dead ball ability far better at Forest. He had that one counter on Saturday where he nicked the ball and was bombing forward - and his control let him down and he slowed the whole thing down. When he's on form he's running full speed into the box with that and either shooting or crossing that. What he did at Forest constantly last season.

Many Forest fans were devastated when he left and hailed him as their most important player; even ahead of Anderson and MGW. It’s hard to believe they wouldn’t have mentioned a consistently poor first touch if it had been as sloppy as what we’ve seen so far in black and white. Like I said he’s probably just in his head too much right now.

He’ll do very well here, I’m sure of it.

Maybe the step up and price tag are affecting him?

I hope he comes good prem proven and hit the ground running is part of the premium price you have to pay and right now and early doors as it is we aren't reaping the rewards for it.

Yet...

Their fans massively rated him. That’s normally a very useful indicator of how good a player is. Let’s just hold off on making strong judgements for a while longer. Yes, he’s not the most technically gifted player and never will be, does he have some very useful traits? Absolutely, can he be turned into a very good player for us, likely yes

Still learning the system.

I think his positioning is way higher than we usually setup. There was one where Trippier must play a blind pass to where he assumed Elanga would be and Elanga wasn't even in camera shot. Then when Benfica were attacking it felt like it was 6-7 seconds before I saw Elanga defensively and not for the first time. That's obviously Trippier's fault but it points to a disjointed approach.

Yeah I remember the play you're talking about. Elanga had fucking legged it for a long ball counter and Tripps went for short pass. Elanga was 3/4 of the way up the pitch already [emoji38]

Yeah that one made me chuckle and it felt like absolute gold for anyone making the argument that he's a poor fit for us. Pair of them on another wavelength altogether.

Tbf I thought it was quite forgivable from both him and Tripps. Elanga's been told to come on and do his thing - i.e. burst into space beyond their defensive line - meanwhile Tripps has spent the last 80 minutes playing short passes inside to Bruno or to Murphy. That doesn't happen if they start the game together.

I've still got really high hopes for him. Sometimes things just take time. It's not like he's been wall-to-wall guff for us; he was lethal against Barca and should've had at least one assist.

Is Wissa more of a "fox in the box" type striker? Might suit Elanga's game more. At the minute with big Nick dropping deep sometimes feels like our wingers are crossing it in to no one in the box.

Sure Gordon and murphy passed it into the box and no one was in and around the box so it just fizzed away.

Obviously fairly meh showing late on from Elanga him and osula chasing down the keeper into making a distribution mistake is all I can remember him doing of note.

Same. One thing he has going for him is he seems very down to earth and coachable, no doubt he'll take on board everything Howe says to him.

Played a lot of his career at LW so I doubt it
