Was it Baleba running back with him? Maybe the only player on the pitch he might think he can’t just run past.

Well Gordon burned him first half in a flat race so Elanga should blitz him. But confidence is a funny thing it might have passed his mind.

I definitely think it’s mental. Adjusting to a new club, making a step up where you might believe you have to try more and push more stuff you wouldn’t do before. Something like that.

If Jacob Murphy can be made effective for us then surely Anthony Elanga can.

You'd think that playing for Man Utd with all the pressure around that would have made him somewhat used to it.

I feel like we've bought him for his physical attributes rather than technical, which is the opposite of what we need. Playing in a counter team with gobs of space to run into he'd be mint but we're not that team right now.

I think he'll do well for us eventually, give it a year or two.  We really need to look for some wingers with a bit more to them than just 'runs fast, works hard' though.

Kudos for the same money would have been a huge improvement over Elanga.

But he wouldn’t have come.

At this point you feel Semenyo, Minteh, Akliouche would’ve been better use but it doesn’t matter anymore.

On Elanga - I can’t believe his touch is going to be this bad consistently. He needs confidence.

Yes and no like. Kudus is extremely gifted technically but I’d hazard not that easy to coach and someone whose head drops and won’t make the most of his ability. Elanga is someone who will absolutely maximise their potential. He’s not anywhere near as gifted technically but he’s a top athlete and he can play off both feet.

He will come good but I think we’re fucked at the moment by virtue of neither winger being in form and it making the other side look worse because of it. We’re not breaking at speed properly when we do get chances and that’s most likely down to confidence and decision making.

At the end of their careers, Elanga will have achieved a lot more than Kudus in my opinion even though it should be the other way round

What is this based on?

You are talking like you have insight into Kudus personality.

Kudus has already achieved a lot more in his career than Elanga.

I’m talking about his drop off in form at West Ham from looking like one of the world’s best emerging talents. They couldn’t wait to get rid of him and sold him for a bargain price. We all make comments all the time about players without knowing who they are, everything is inference and analysis of what we can see on the pitch.

you’ve got a different opinion to me, fair enough, let’s see how it plays out across their careers

West Ham is a basket case of a club.

West Ham’s other 2 best players play in Kudus best position - RW, AM. Constantly moving position, most often playing on the left had a bigger impact on his performance than anything else.

Constantly changing positions, roles and manager isn’t great for any player.

Now under a proper gaffer, given a defined role he’s playing well again.

Not to mention he’s a much more decorated player already.

It's a pointless comparison anyway because from what I gathered from this summer's reporting Kudus wanted to to join Spurs.

Maybe we could have looked abroad but from the Premier League options Elanga was really the only one that was available for us to get.

My long term gripe is that we lack any variety in the team, especially on the wings - it's all blood and thunder, very little guile and technicality.

That was my worry when we signed Elanga, he's a pure speed merchant, but he looks so lost and confused and seems to be invisible for huge parts of the game.

Gordon for all his work rate, rarely offers much end product - so we're playing with little on the wings right now.

Elanga makes Murphy look like a 55m winger, which makes you question the signing.

if he was a couple of years younger, Murphy would be worth £55m on his form the last 18 months.

Not sure how true that is. Semenyo, Ndiaye, maybe Minteh, he needs development but Dibling maybe others.

And there’s no actual rule stopping us shopping abroad.

A big part in why we seemingly wanted Elanga was his PL experience meaning he would hit the ground running and that hasn’t happened.

Not sure on the others, but due to them already been ransacked I doubt Bournemouth were going to sell Semenyo.

At least outside of silly money we couldn't commit to this summer due to needing to cover multiple areas.

Yep. If we are going to talk about alternatives, then we need to stop mentioning Semenyo who was happy to sign a new contract with Bournemouth, and Kudus who wanted to go to Spurs.

You and shearergol already told us so the other week. Still early days and it still couldn't be clearer that you're both more concerned with being right than Newcastle doing well.

Pretty certain I’m in the top 2% of positive posters on here. I’ve done the maths.  I just call out the shit signings when I see them [emoji38] He’s an ok player, not worth £55m and not a CL winger. Hope he has a good career though, seems a nice lad. If we can sell him and joelinton next summer I’ll be buzzing.

The last winger we signed from Forrest was a certain Franz Carr for those of a certain vintage. For those who are not old cunts he was also lightening quick.

Unfortunately that’s not where the comparisons stop, he also used to run into opposition players, run aimlessly out of play without seeming to realise where the touchline was and perfected the art of crossing the ball out of play.

Early days of course but the lad doesn’t even look like a footballer at the moment.

Fuck me! Mostly we've been playing the ball behind him or static and no one overlapping so he can come inside. Its been literally "here's the ball ,get on with it" its also hit Gordon fwiw.

I'm optimistic that it's either a blip in form or he's coachable enough to be worthy of the price tag but he's played two of the worst games I've seen a winger play for us and we've had absolute fucking donkeys over the last 20 years.

I can remember Carr’s first few games - he was like shit off a stick, me and my mates were excited about him.  But like you said, that’s all his game was.

I don’t think I’ll ever understand why we signed this guy. He was a pace merchant on the break. Now he up against a set defence most weeks.

perplexing and terrible signing.

It's astounding how many are willing to make themselves look.like muppets over and over.

Much to everyone's glee, we'll get a big money move wrong eventually, but at least give it a few months before we nail our colours to the mast.

There's nothing wrong with even having the opinion.

It's the constant bleating on and on about it with such over the top statements over and over again.

If and when it doesn't end up like they claimed and it all gets thrown back in their faces because they were being so irritating, then will come the indignation and crying victim.

Just unbelievable
