Can someone put together a way past their prime XI? I've got Sol Campbell, John Barnes, Ian Rush, Kluivert... who else?

Owen, Butt, Duff, Smith, Viduka

All played in the same relegation era of course

So there's heaven.

Here's hell:

Alnwick

Carr

Boumsong

Marcelino

Babayaro

Obertan

Faye

Colback

Luque

Riviere

L. de Jong

Subs: Sels, Bramble, Caçapa, Saivet, Ireland, Xisco, Ranger

Manager: You already know who 🥬

*Edit: I forgot Jeff Hendrick exists, swap him for Colback

Geremi has to be in there. Lest we forget, Fumaca also played Premier League football for us (5 of the 55 games he played across a 13-year professional career).

Going off this season?

Possibly Trippier.

Though not when we first signed him!

Pearce was technically way past his prime (was a manager the season before), but was really good for us (actually a contender for best XI back four prior to the current era)

Fucking Ron Geremi, man [emoji38]

How the hell KK was able to get a tune out of him at all was a miracle

Bearing in mind that 'past their prime' doesn't necessarily mean shite (cause I would never speak ill of the great man) then our GK has to be Pav. Remember when Roeder brought back him for a season as cover? He played 2 games that season and retired as a Geordie.

I thought Robbie Elliot came back too, ostensibly as fitness coach, but I'm sure he was a registered player. Can't find anything about it now. Might be a dream.

Updated in a 4-4-2 for me:

Pope (pre-2025)

Trippier

Woodgate

Burn

Hall

Beardsley

Lee

Bruno

Robert

Shearer

Isak (with appropriate trigger warning)

Five subs (nee keepers, so risking a Pope brain fart):

Botman (pre-2025)

Cabaye

Batty

HBA (pre-2013)

Wilson

I would play that crappy Amorim formation just so we can get both Beardsley and Ben Arfa as number 10s behind Shearer

Given

Coloccini Schar Woodgate

Solano (RWB) Hall (LWB)

Bruno Batty

Ben Arfa Beardsley

Shearer

Subs:

Krul/Pope

Burn/Botman

Tino/Domi

Cabaye/Tonali

Ginola/ Robert

Ba/Isak

A "great career but not at Newcastle" XI.

Forster (had to cheat there, otherwise Beasant)

Carr

Sansom

Campbell

Cacapa

Thauvin

Duff

Wijnaldum

Geremi

Kluivert

Owen

Honourable mentions to Tomasson, Huckerby, Rush, Saha...

Would be in most I bet if not for Shearer, and I'd have Beardsley. I don't like shoehorning Beardsley in a CM as it's lazy or AM as you couldn't have wingers. (I like it to be a realistic XI)

Sandro another 6-9 months away from knocking batty out (not literally, only Joelinton out of our current squad is capable of that)

Batty???

good player but and I know I’m a broken record his replacing of Clarkie was a critical part of our downfall and more so than the acquisition of Tino

Didn’t Batty win The Mag’s player of the season award that year despite signing in March?  He was our best player in the run-in.  We’d started falling apart well before he signed.  Loved Clarky, but Batty was comfortably a better footballer.

Made by the players around him and the system as much as anything - we all loved Cole at the time, but the fact he never managed to score 20 league goals in a season for that Man Utd side tells a story of how good finisher he really was.  He wouldn’t be close to my all time XI in terms of talent; and if we’re talking favourites, he wouldn’t get ahead of his two predecessors in terms of sentiment (acting the cunt at Wembley, like a less talented Isak)

Cole is fifth in the list of all-time Premier League goalscorers and second when you take away penalties. He was never the main man at Manchester United, a side which changed substantially a couple of times while he was there, but despite a slow start he developed his all-round game and was pretty crucial to their major successes of the late nineties. He then continued to score at a decent rate well into his thirties playing for middling clubs.

I think if anything his game and the changes he made to it are underrated. His partnerships with Beardsley and then Yorke remain highly regarded and are certainly some of the best I've seen. And I think we have had few players more talented. It's always difficult to compare between generations, but next to Isak his burst of pace and all-around movement made him more of a persistent threat.

Couldn't disagree more. Our downfall was Sir Les losing his shooting boots (21 goals in first 23 games of the season, 4 in 14 after that) and Peter Schmeichel.
