That’s right, we’re a long ball team - we’d have to be a long ball outfit, otherwise we’d have to play the ball through our dogshit midfield. I still hate these cunts, and always will - but if this is the extent of their footballing knowledge, then I hope they enjoy a rude awakening

It's funny though because I see the same level of obviousness with how to beat Villa. Contain their possession then hit them on the break when their back four's on the halfway line. Stottie Posted Friday at 22:38 Share Posted Friday at 22:38 Bournemouth did it with cooperative refereeing, i.e., someone willing to keep the cards in the pocket. If we'd had a stricter ref or a homer in that game and the cards had started coming out around 30' or so with the score still at 1-1, we'd have made more of a game of it. As it was, Tyler Adams etc. just kicked us off the park. Bournemouth lead the league in fouls committed, so our lads should have seen seen it coming. fwiw, we're third lowest in fouls conceded and third highest in fouls against this season. We're not a dark arts team any more. The most fouled team is Villa. We are definitely vulnerable to counters/fast breaks and losing the ball in midfield but Liverpool and Man City demonstrated that better than Fulham did. It was more the "they have so many championship players" I was laughing at though

Mazzy Posted Saturday at 01:29 Share Posted Saturday at 01:29 What that Villa fan said is true of every single football team thats ever played the game. With the exception of various Barcelona and Man City teams. If you press and harry teams with energy and precision they will make mistakes and they won't be able to find their rhythm, the problem is most teams don't have the organisation or players to carry that gameplay out every single week. All four/five of our backline are susceptible to being pressed, they don't particularly handle it well, but the exact same can be said for Villa. The difference is we've been playing this way consistently for 5 weeks, they have not.
Emotic Posted Saturday at 03:09 Share Posted Saturday at 03:09 Crystal Palace also does the "press and breakaway" tactic away from home. To great effect too, until they fell apart at Man CIty and ours.
Womble75 Posted Saturday at 05:54 Share Posted Saturday at 05:54 On paper you would think this is a really tough game, a team who has won their last 4 Premier league games and only lost at home once all season long. However, this might be a good time to play them. They might have a bit of an emotional hang over from the PSG game and might be distracted by their semi-final on the horizon. I think a point is the more realistic result here and I would take a point now but I wouldn't be at all surprised if we turn Villa over and won comfortably. JT24 Posted Saturday at 06:05 Share Posted Saturday at 06:05 We batter these. Not even close. 0-6 to keep the run going.

Jewel Posted Saturday at 06:12 Share Posted Saturday at 06:12 We are better than them. If we play at our best, we win, and there isn't a damn thing they can do about it. That's a fact.
David Edgar Posted Saturday at 06:15 Share Posted Saturday at 06:15 They are a very good team who can match us at our best. Going to be a very hard game.

That's a fact. Funnily enough the Villa fan on EIBW podcast said the same thing about them. It made me wonder if two teams have ever faced each at at "100%". There's always something stopping a team doing that, perhaps it never actually happens over the span of a teams cycle.
geordiesteve710 Posted Saturday at 06:42 Share Posted Saturday at 06:42 Two really well-matched teams although we've done well in the head-to-heads recently. Feels more "must-win" for them than us given the league table. It's also the start of a massive week where they play Man City and a cup semi-final. I'm also guessing they will be pumped up for it given their perceived injustice regarding Boxing Day. My main concern would be managerial decisions in-game where I'd back Emery's experience to get the better of Tindall as the game unfolds. I'm pleased that Joelinton is available as he'll be crucial in the midfield battle, but right now I'd say a point and a couple pints in the Wellington/Post Office Vaults would represent a very satisfactory trip to Brum. Mattoon Posted Saturday at 07:01 Share Posted Saturday at 07:01 Quietly confident on this one, they are a good side, but even watching them against PSG I thought they should have been punished more and their goals were mostly fortunate rather than great goals. These are susceptible to the way we play and if we're on our game tonight then we'll punish them. I have less animosity towards them than I did when we were relegated and anyone that upsets the cartel are OK by me. Having said that, reading those posts by their supporters about us was a little rage inducing and I hope we smash these tonight, I also hope they win the rest of their games to finish above Chelsea though. ExiledGeordie Posted Saturday at 07:55 Share Posted Saturday at 07:55 In fairness the last few Villa fans I’ve met including one of my patients were very respectful of us and complimentary. The patient of mine pointed out he thought the Sob on the Tyne stuff was a load of bollocks and that what both clubs have in common is that we’re both fighting the ridiculous PSR/big 6 situation. Brummie would be able to give more of an opinion on what Villa fans think of us I guess though.
Dr.Spaceman Posted Saturday at 08:04 Share Posted Saturday at 08:04 Would love a win obviously but I'd genuinely be equally happy with a decent performance and coming away with a point. Just don't lose.

Just don't lose. Yeah a win basically almost has us in the champions league. A draw is absolutely fine too really as it keeps Villa away from us with that 5 point gap. Thing is after us Villa have City away, Fulham home then Bournemouth away sandwiched amongst cup semi final. They are far from straightforward games. I think what I’m saying is we can take a loss on the chin if it happens but it’d be great to come away with points if any sort today.
