Brighton & Hove Albion 1-1 Newcastle United - 04/05/2025

Hmmm if we had to win an away game out of this, arsenal and villa then I'm sorry but Brighton is obviously the most winnable one. Point feels ok now but it might be one we look back on with disappointment.

Brighton aren't very good.

I think we are really close to the next level, it’s a final pass here and there in the final third, or a bit of pace at the back.  Hope we are allowed to spend some money in the summer

Thank god for the penalty. Felt like we could’ve played into the night and not score.

Our performances seem streaky and we’ve not been playing particularly well for a while. Or at least not as well as we can.
I'm not sure of the maxim, good teams put in sub standard performances and still pick up points…..I think good teams don’t put in streaks of sub standard performances tbh.

We were less than the some of our parts. Not sure why.

Brighton were not much good at all but we didn’t look like finding the cutting edge needed to open them up properly.
Still, we’re still very much a project in progress. Hope we get CL for the budget and see if we can build some more next year.

I thought we were unlucky today. That final pass and a bit of quality was just missing.

Its a good point though and I have full confidence that we beat Chelsea and Everton at home.

Neither is our record there. Football is a weird old game.

Baleba was absolute quality, beast physically and knows what he's doing when his team have the ball

Dream left side 8 / Joelinton upgrade

No way it will happen though, probably go for £100m next year

Never seen a player look so good and so bad in the space of a minute.

Think that's a bit harsh tbh. We absolutely battered both Man Utd and Palace, playing brilliantly in both. Then you've got Leicester and Ipswich which we made light work of. I think we're routinely playing pretty well but have spells in most games where we look untidy.

Today we were poor in the first half but were well worth the point in the end.

I always find this strange. We were fine against Man U and Crystal Palace, poor against Villa, and meh against a dog shit Ipswitch side. I've heard from a few posters in 2025 that we haven't been playing well, but here we are.

I dunno about that. He looked like he could barely kick a ball cleanly for most of the game imo.

Since the cup final we're W5 D1 L1. Pretty good form if you ask me.

Fine is an understatement tbf, second half Man Utd and first half Palace we were outstanding. We were as good as we needed to be against Ipswich.

Why did it take so long to clear the penalty decision? Ridiculous.

They were checking an offside as well. [emoji38] as if anyone being offside would have made any difference at all.

The brief was always to win the home games and anything from the away games was a bonus. This is a bonus and if we do our job and beat Chelsea next week we have a cushion with our goal difference that in two games should be too difficult for Chelsea and Villa to completely overhaul.

Palace we battered, they were shite. No way around it. Man U was a closer game than the score line makes out. Think they might have edged possession, shots and shot on target were about the same iirc. Don't think there was much disparity in XG either. But we were way more clinical but we certainly didn't dominate them for 90 mins like we did Palace. Surely you must remember that?

I'll not include the Villa game because we were absolutely abject and I wouldn't put much stock in the Palace game because they were.

We're not using the ball as well as team with Trips, Schar, Bruno, Sandro, Gordon/Barnes and Isak should be doing. There's nothing polemic about that opinion. It's not heresy the way some happy clappers (not you btw) on here treat anything less than fawning praise.

Just feel we don't control the ball sometimes when we need to and we can definitely struggle if a team defends deeper because we're not particularly set up for incisive passing. We very 'down the flanks' and we seem best in transition.

We're leaving Isak a bit isolated as a result and he doesn't look that useful in the box on his own surrounded by defenders. He hasn't the power or the leap to make the best out of that. It's not his optimal situation. Which is fine, he's still great in situations that suit him better. But we're not engineering them enough imho.

Others may view it differently and your view I will always read as it tends to be balanced and thoughtful. Others, not so much.

There definitely is an issue re ball retention given the players available.  I’m confident that it’s an issue that Howe will address in the summer - I think some of it is coming from an evolution in our style of play
