Also Haaland went down in a vaguely similar incident last night - no penalty and no booking.

The ref has to be completely sure it is a dive surely, especially for a 2nd yellow. Joke decision.

My take was he was hoping to draw the keeper into the foul so he did the big touch that he'll never catch but the foul didn't come, then he kind of gave up in frustration.

It's the kind of situation, where there's a potential sending off, why you wonder why a ref can't ask to check the footage before making the decision.

Yes, there's no way that ref last night would have given a second yellow to the likes of Salah, Haaland, Rice, etc in that same situation.

At no point did he ask for a penalty. Slightest of touches from the keeper BUT the main thing is him jarring his left foot when he planted it. That's why he went down .

Zero simulation

Zero intent

No yellow.

Absolutely no idea wtf you were looking at.

No. He didn’t ask for a penalty. I mean he should get up earlier and tell the referee he has no intention to dive so just call a goal kick. This is to protect himself.

I know the ref is fucking shit, of course I know it. What I mean is since most of the refs are shit, you have kinda no choice but to protect yourself, get up earlier and tell the ref that he doesn’t need to make any decision. Of course if you feel there is contact then just lie down and wait for the VAR.

It’s very unlucky for the boy. But as a professional, you have to adapt to the new environment where the ref are fucking shit and VAR tends to make it even worse.

Just seen the incident. I think he's kicked the ball away and is waiting for contact, but because he pauses he plants his leg awkwardly and falls over. It's probably why he doesn't appeal.

Either way, extremely harsh decision.

The ref did appear to give a goal kick, until Man U players approach and surround him.

From the angle behind looking towards the Leazes end their was contact from the keeper's hand. No dive, no appeal. Ref caved to pressure.

You're allowed to fall over. Especially in a situation in which you're expecting to get clattered by the keeper. The simulation part is asking for the foul or claiming something happened when it didn't. He clearly didn't ask for anything or even have an incredulous look on his face. Looked disappointed more than anything.

Big part of not protesting is that he knew he was on a yellow and there wasn’t much/any contact.

But as soon as the ball breaks he’s thinking ‘penalty’ and he has to think ‘penalty’.

If it was against us I would want a second yellow but it is a bit harsh.  Situations reversed at OT I don’t think it’s given

More sure how your first two points add up to your third really?

Has he tried to engineer a penalty? Yes. Has he dived? Kinda.

He gives the ref a decision as they say.

I guess you're right but I think the ref has a duty to keep 11 players on the pitch unless some serious foul play has occured and I really don't think that falling over and not asking for a foul meets that threshold.
