ChrisMcQuillan
Apologies if there's already a topic on this elsewhere, but I was curious about people's views on this. I've watched the first half of the Liverpool game, and it's the first bit of Newcastle football I've watched since the end of last season. Usually I'm watching all the pre-season games, every second I can get. While I still want Newcastle to win every match and do as well as possible, I haven't felt this disillusioned with football in my lifetime (35 years). The state of the corruption in both the Premier League and Europe, which is broadly responsible for us not having a striker to field on the pitch, just leaves me wondering what on Earth the point of getting emotionally invested actually is? When other clubs bring in new rules to stop us competing, and I see Villa fans talking about being down to the same squad they had when Gerrard was in charge due to having to sell all their players despite their excellent performances on the pitch, what on earth can you aspire to? I hated the doldrums one the Ashley-era and getting beat in the derby because it felt like one football club trying to be a football club, and the other being Mike Ashley PLC. At the moment, I feel worse than that, because I'm disinterested in the entire sport at an elite level. It's not actually a disillusionment with football itself: I'm playing more football day-to-day than I ever have. It's just watching the Premier League/European competition. The joy has gone. Does anyone else feel similarly?
Mike
Games gone. It's sports entertainment. Only saving grace is us having enough money to get eventually booked into a title run.
Kimbo
There isn’t a point really. Competition is being smothered in the premier league, but if you go around Europe it’s as bad or worse. Most leagues are like F1 at its worst, just a procession. It’s only going to get worse as well.

Zero
The other leagues are even worse. It’s just Bayern league, PSG league, galactico league and interpoli league. and Villa also voted for the PSR to fuck us up until they become the victim. They are fucking idiots

PSR and VAR are the two biggest things hammering the game at the moment like, nothing else is even in the conversation. Particularly PSR. Everyone knows there needs to be some sort of regulation, but a regulation that totally undermines competition? It's abhorrent and is the game's biggest existential threat. Moose
A long standing pet peeve of mine has been added time. It feels extra pertinent tonight as well! How is it that we live in a day and age where goals can be ruled out because the shavings of the attackers pinky fingernail are offside or players can be sent off after the ref watches 40 replays of an incident from 17 different angles at 19 different speeds but when it comes to how long to actually play the fucking game, it's so arbitrary. There could be 9 mins and 46 secs worth of stoppages but the ref who has 1000 other things to think about will declare "ehhhm, 8 minutes extra time sounds about right". If there's 8 mins 30 seconds worth of stoppages, does the ref round up or down or does he even count it that precisely? I know that I'm advocating for even more micro managing of the game but I think of all the elements of a football match, the time in play should probably be considered most important. Stottie
PSR is the big one. If we, Villa, and Forest, were allowed to spend, it would really shake things up and we'd have a very competitive league. The other teams too of course, but those three clubs have quite large or large fanbases and owners who can easily afford to put money in if they were allowed to. The bollocks about "sustainability" could easily be covered by the same owners parking cash in club bonds to cover future wages.
