Olympique de Marseille 2-1 Newcastle United (25/11/25) | post-match from pg. 56

Recommended Posts

I don't think we played that bad, Pope essentially cost us the game. If it was 1-1 I'd be happy, if we won even happier, but the difference between getting anything out of the game and not was Pope's moment of madness. We did well to recover after their second goal.

Easy to blame Pope or the capitulation in the second half, but for me it's all about that first half and the same lesson we refuse to learn - our absolutely shit game management, sitting on a one goal lead, and playing like the endless chances we continue to waste will keep coming, then coming out of the match with our dick in our hands. I'm absolutely sick of it

The fact we keep doing this and getting taught the same repeated lesson seems to do absolutely nothing to budge the mental block we have to make sure it never happens again by keeping our foot on their necks and being ruthless. Time after time, match after match we put ourselves in this position and it's incredibly frustrating. It needs to end, we need to play at 1 nil up like we're 1 nil behind, because if we don't it'll happen anyway. Or, get to two nil and play like that, doing it at one nil is ridiculous.

Pope: 3.5

Thiaw: 7

Schär: 6.5

Burn: 6

Livramento: 6

Tonali: 5

Bruno: 5

Willock: 7.5

Murphy: 5.5

Gordon: 4.5

Barnes: 7

God I can't bear defeats these days, man. Three mornings I haven't woken up and wanted to top myself wasn't nearly enough.

How well we played barely when matters at this point, though we were a 6/10 if you're being extremely generous. The point is we lost from a winning position in the third fucking away game in a row. That is an absolutely terrible sequence.

Mannnnn 😫😫😫

I think I’m the opposite this season. We’re not that  good and that’s that. We will lose games.
Id be happier if our football was looking tidy, despite the results, but it’s kind of getting worse.

Ran the players into the ground for the second match in a few days. And for what?

Always being in the game in a really entertaining game of football away from home against Marseille. 20 shots, 9 on target more touches in the box than them. Maybe for those reasons?

We rotated well but then sat back after going up on 7 minutes. I get we want transitions, but there has to be a balance of aggression to it still, especially when you've got players who should be fit enough to handle keeping pressure up for 45 minutes.

Shite final ball too often.

Pope obviously having another brainfart was the killer blow.

Yep, not one against a decent side either.

Spurs, who finished 17th.

Birmingham, who were in League One.

West Ham, who finished 14th.

Leicester, who finished 18th.

Union SG, who would be lucky to get into the top 12 in the PL.

Union SG would be a championship team.

Maybe ok isn’t good enough anymore, we really need to up our game if we’re to start challenging cup & titles, we’ve stagnated.

Weve no right challenging for cups and titles given our turnover man.

Youve been tricked into thinking we can because our manager keeps performing miracles.

Weve lost away to a really decent European outfit, which would have beaten most sides tonight and yet still we could have come away with something.

Had we started other players and lost you would have whinged. You have a monopoly on whinging.

I said before the game that we should have rotated more though. It's not hindsight.

The frustration isn't in response to this one game or performance tbf Blimp, the away form in general warrants criticism. We are one of the most Jekyll and Hyde teams I've ever seen.

We were decent tonight in patches but can't keep parking the bus then melting down once we concede a goal on the road. It's the same game over and over again, it's hard not to voice frustrations when you know we can play as well as we did on Saturday.

Must say i do agree with all of that, my comments are on this game. Overall i couldn't agree more, and it is worrying that we haven't found a way out of it.

Like the game against City, one of those games that could have gone either way, this time it went against us.

We had chances, particularly on the break but the final ball or finish wasn't quite there. But they had some chances as well. De Zerbi's still a full-on pass-around-the-back nonce. They were very good coping with our high press and looked a good side on the ball. Wish we could do a bit of that, whilst sounding like a broken record, our inability to move the ball  out of defence under any kind of pressure is a real hindrence.

In the end a keeper howler separated it, though Pope did make a couple of good stops otherwise.

Just not a particularly good performance overall, don't think it was awful, but not particularly good. A few of our big players were a bit off and and we lacked a real quality playmaker type to change things.

Thank fuck someone else was watching.

Pope cost us a stupid goal. It gave them momentum and they capitalised. Other than that stupid 5 minute spell, it was a fairly even game in terms of chances.

Pope - 1 - cost us the game.

Murphy - 6 - Did okay

Thiaw - 8 - Imperious

Schar - 5 - Beaten by Auba for the second

Burn - 6 - Miles better at centre half

Livramento - 6 - Did okay out of position

Willock - 8 - our best player tonight, looked bright and suited the game

Tonali - 4 - Passing was crap

Bruno - 3 - Woeful

Barnes - 7 - Took his goal well. Could have had another

Gordon - 2 - waste of a shirt

Subs:

Miley - 6

Elanga - 4 - abysmal

Woltemade - 5 - looked better when he came on but didn't offer much

Hall - 6 - Gave us some more width, corner was horrific

Ramsay - 5 - anonymous mostly

Great post mate! Agree with everything and the ratings FWIW

It's mental how we seem to go 1-0 up and lose the plot (West Ham, Brentford, tonight....)

Exactly the game I watched. We weren’t bad. It was basically all on Pope.
