Honestly never really think about the January window so I literally can’t be moved to any kind of reaction.

I do think we’re sometimes a bit unrealistic with the level of backup we expect to have though. If your main players get injured and the backup players come in, you can’t really just sign backups for the backups on the fly. You do actually have to manage the players you have and think about long term squad planning.

Probably only LB where the squad is actually light.

I'm not going to bother to check whether this is true or not, but being the only club in Europe not to sign a player is an absolute embarrassment and a disgrace.

At the risk of sounding overly fatalistic, we'll probably be out of the League Cup shortly and the CL sooner rather than later, so that should help with the fixture congestion a bit. We won't be doing this insane twice-a-week schedule forever.

I expect we'll be playing in the CL until  mid-March. Another 4 games in the CL. There will only be 8 games league left to play. We should expect to win 6 of those mind.

As a club we are not aggressive so I didn't expect much action. If we intended on giving the CL/Europa a real go, we would've invested for the short-term. We didn't so I don't expect a CL/Europa spot in the league. Maybe not even Europe. If we do secure Europe somehow, it's a great coaching job from Howe.

I think the top 6 will be the top 6. Can we win that mini-league below?

The squad is still desperately short of quality imo. We'll need someone, probably 2 players to really come to the fore if we are to finish 7th or higher. Wissa, Barnes, Gordon, Bruno, Tonali - someone needs to get on some mean form. I was hoping we could bring in someone to provide a bit of a shock to the system.

Anyone able to explain how we're skint?

I don't think anyone at the club has suggested we are, just the players we want weren't available in January. We probably were rushed into making signings in the summer due to Isak downing tools, but we don't like operating that way. Given the way the season's panned out you can understand why.

We're not skint; we're complying with a set of financial rules which limits our ability to spend, relative to the teams we're seeking to usurp. The rules are revenue based and because ours is much less than our competitors, we have less flexibility and a much narrower margin for error when it comes to signing players. This leads to us taking a theoretically risk-averse approach to recruitment where we only invest if we feel certain that the player is both available at a fair price and will improve us somehow.

Clearly we've taken the view this month that no such player is available so rather than deviate from that approach, they've decided to not invest.

I doubt we’re hard-capped by PSR or anything, but the sort of signing we realistically might have been able to make in January is a backup left back in his late prime for 15-20m or so. And in a PSR world, I just don’t think you can spend significant money for players like that anymore.

'we had a very limited amount money available this window' were his words.

It was tongue in cheek about being skint, but I really don't understand how the pot is so limited given Isak, CL, commercial increases etc.

I'm not being funny, I genuinely don't understand

I think he just means we have limited PSR room so we might decide not to gamble it in January. I don't think it's too complicated.

I know...... but how is that possible

Well we always have limited PSR room I assume.

It doesn't mean it was literally impossible to make a signing, it just means we judge it's better to keep the money for the summer.

Fair enough. I'm not sure. Maybe it's something to do with the PSR cycle and we need to wait for June to come around.

This is what I'm asking though, we've sold Isak for £130, we've got 2 CL campaigns on the books, we've doubled commercial revenue in the last 3 years - how does all this equate to 'limited funds available'

Unless

1. He's talking bollocks and just putting that line out there

2. Our Summer spending has fucked us

I assume it's this, but it's not "it's fucked us" - simply, we chose to spend a lot in the summer. The teams we're trying to topple did the same but were able to invest again this month without the same restraint.

Liverpool spent nearly more than £300million quid on attacking talent that has, thus far, produced pretty middling returns (being kind) - whilst knowing they'd have to wheel out a VVD who is becoming less reliable by the game.

This month they spent £60million on a CB from Ligue 1.

What makes you say that? Not doubting you.

I predict it'll follow a similar path to the previous one, where the clubs all but unaffected by PSR hoover up talent from the clubs from 7th downwards in the revenue tables, whilst those teams recruit from the next tier down - i.e. Europe.

Just a feeling. It seems like teams have been keeping their powder dry a bit and the World Cup tends to put a lot of names in the transfer spotlight. Basically the entire world is playing in it this year. There are a handful of managers who we expect to move in the Summer too, which you would expect to stimulate more action. Then you look at this season’s Premier League which hasn’t been particularly good: I suspect a lot of teams are looking at a rebuild or significant strengthening. Finally, you have six teams with significant CL money and three others who you’d expect to go far in the other competitions.

 Tbh I didn't really think getting someone in was absolutely essential or anything, but it is quite jarring when you see we were the only club that didn't bring anyone in at all, for whatever that's worth.
