Away Day Gadgie
I agree with sbnufc. There's no need for English people to pronounce it like that (unless maybe you're in Spain). Just call it Valencia like normal people do man.
Guest neesy111
So in that case, people should change their pronunciation of players as well?
HaydnNUFC
Was thinking that.
Away Day Gadgie
Nah not really. I personally wouldn't do it. The only way i would change it is if there was a danger that a Spanish person wouldn't understand what i meant. But that's not likely since i'm pretty sure the Spaniards are used to Brits and our shitty pronunciations by now. Absolutely no need to try and sound intelligent or cool, or whatever it is these commentators are trying to achieve.
HaydnNUFC
BTW I don't pronounce Valencia like "Balenthia" or Barcelona as "Barthelona", but it just seems an odd thing to have as a pet hate. And I don't think commentators are trying to sound intelligent or cool when they say it, they're just pronouncing it, well, correctly.
Away Day Gadgie
I find it irritating like. Sure i mentioned commentators doing it with players names a couple of weeks ago. Didn't know there was a ruling council on what you're alllowed to have as a pet hate on here mind
Mole_Toonfan
No where near as annoying as people who aren't italian calling the transfer market "Mercato". Such people need to die in a fire IMO.

gazza ladra
Don’t agree. It’s reasonable to use the English name and pronunciation for the city and the native name for the club isn’t it? Rome/Roma, Napoli/Naples, Paris/PSG
sbnufc
English commentators saying "Balenthia" It's Valencia you cunts. No it's not. You pronounce V in spanish as B. Yeah, and you pronounce V as V in English. Weird that.

Köln too fwiw the same commentator who said "Balenthia" said Getafe with an English G. I assume (maybe wrongly?) it's like "Hetafe" in Spanish. That's why it's a pet hate.. at least be consistent

Guest
Would you be happy being referred to as 'Castillo Nuevo' by the Spanish?
Away Day Gadgie
Would you be happy being referred to as 'Castillo Nuevo' by the Spanish? They could call us whatever they feel comfortable calling us. I certainly wouldn't expect them to try and say "Newcastle" in an English or Geordie accent. Greg
Would you be happy being referred to as 'Castillo Nuevo' by the Spanish? Not analogous as that is the translation of the words 'new' and 'castle' not the place name Newcastle.

Guest firetotheworks
Would you be happy being referred to as 'Castillo Nuevo' by the Spanish? Eh? Since when are pronunciation and translation the same thing?
joeyt
What about PSG's full name? Should we be calling them Paris Saint Germain (with a hard s and t at the end of Paris and Saint respectively) like we would in English or Paree San Jerman

Ok then, "Noocasstlay" as that's probably the closest way you'd say our combination of letters using the way the Spanish would say it.
