A very steep East and Gallowgate stand could maybe work, but the people living in Leazes Park would never see daylight again. Imagine something like the Mestalla:

That’s an amazing stadium once you’re in, I feel like the pitch might be slightly sunken too.

The issue is that the scale of anything like that is just going to completely dominate the setting of Leazes Terrace and St. James Street. These views give a good impression of that:

I wonder if there's an argument to made that because the existing east stand is solid concrete, you could actually build a higher, much more transparent stand and actually increase the light that Leazes Terrace gets.

The east stand is barbaric from the outside, could do with some cladding or something to make it better if it can't be changed structurly.

I kind of like the brutalist nature to it.

Shows how the ground has been developed over the years.

You can't really make a stand transparent. Also, light isn't really the issue, although it could be past a certain point, the main issue with building up would be the increase in scale of it and the way that would visually dominate the setting of the listed buildings.

Maybe NCC's planners / conservation officers would have a completely different view on it :dontknow:

I'm thinking that too.

It's such an archaic design. It would almost certainly (and probably incredibly easy given we'll have top Saudi architects working on it) be able to be demolished and rebuilt, while increasing capacity and also maybe even with less imposition on Leazes Terrace.

Love this - if only for the imagination - from one of the folks on Skyscraper City, including the Lords style media centre within the East Stand, enabling us to replace media/corporate in the Milburn with more seats.

This is great work but making Leazes Terrace the focal point and main entrance of the ground seems a weird choice

Here’s a SJP question that doesn’t relate to or involve relocation or expanding:

If you were going to your first match all over again, and might only get to one for the foreseeable future, where would you sit for the one time awe-striking moment? Stand/row/etc.

Asking for a friend. ;)

Knock down The View, St James' Point and the Business School, do away with Barrack road and move St James' west a few hundred metres. Sorted.
