It’s difficult to really say what the actual impact would be on attendances lower down until you actually did it I suppose. In that Orient v Southend example, it’s probably high enough up the pyramid that losing between 50-200 off the gate isn’t going to cause a massive issue. Go 4/5 levels down and maybe it does. I know it's shit, but so what? We're Newcastle fans and want to watch Newcastle first and foremost. Why can't we explore other avenues for revenue protection, why does it have to be us fans that have to resort to IPTV or be happy with Soccer Saturday. Players, agents, owners and league execs are taking billions out the game for what? People say players are paid well because blah blah supply and demand. Well if the demand ain't there for the lower leagues...
AyeDubbleYoo Posted Sunday at 22:34 Share Posted Sunday at 22:34 (edited) It has to be free customer choice about what team you want to watch. It’s ludicrous that you can’t buy a pass to watch all your team’s games for example, like you can in MLB or NBA. Personally I love lower league football but people should be able to watch the team they actually support. The idea you can subscribe to TNT, Sky and Amazon and still not see all the games is why I don’t criticise anyone who chooses illegal IPTV. Personally, I don’t watch non-league, so am I particularly bothered how any of the clubs are getting on, not really. But equally, I don’t think just taking the attitude of ‘fuck them’ helps in the grander scheme. We could take that attitude with the payments the PL are supposed to filter down to the EFL and beyond, and where would we end up? You’re right thought that there has to be a better situation than the current mess, I just don’t know what it is. I think it's only a matter of time before the PL go down the streaming route and sell subscriptions rather than do deals with Sky, TNT etc. Maybe 5 or 10 years down the line, they'll be flogging a 'Team Pass' to see specifically 1 chosen team for £24.99 a month (or whatever) or £39.99 a month for a 'League Pass' to get access to any game at any time. And they'll make an absolute killing in the process
AyeDubbleYoo Posted Sunday at 23:24 Share Posted Sunday at 23:24 MLB pass is like £100 a season for 160 games live and on demand, including excellent app with ball-by-ball live coverage, and a choice of audio (including radio) from all the available broadcasters. Can't imagine anything British ever coming close to that level of quality and value - but being able to watch the games would be a start.

Those pricing examples you've given are probably not far off what they'd go for if they went down the road of continuing the Sky model, which is outdated and has always been very exclusionary to those without sufficient financial means. Instead I'd love to see a huge rethink. Get rid of this nonsense idea that was invented in the 90s, of the PL being a premium product with a premium price tag. Instead aim to have everyone who loves football watching as much of their product as is possible, with cost not seen as a hurdle to anyone. They'd have an opportunity to achieve absolutely incredible reach with young and old viewers if it was priced at say £10/month and they'd eliminate illegal streaming in the process. Or make a deal with Netflix/Amazon and get it on there at little or no extra cost. They could make more money doing it this way if they strike the right balance, guarantee future fans and ensure almost every single view of their product was legal, exposed to their advertisers and whatever else they wanted to do with it. There are parallels with TV in that Netflix got things very, very right in the beginning and gave people what they had been crying out for. They made people abandon their torrents with their slick UI, incredible library, fair pricing, flexible subscription etc. Then the rest of the industry wanted on the gravy train and it all went to shit. The PL would have no real competition and no excuse for not prioritising reach over outdated pricing from day 1, but sadly I think shortsighted greed will win the day as it generally always does these days. Even if they did go down the streaming route then evn £40 a month would work out cheaper than having to subscribe to Sky Sports, TNT, Amazon etc. And it would also guarantee that the punter would be able to see any match they wanted which, despite subscribing to all platforms, isn't possible right now. Obviously binning Sky/TNT you'd lose access to other sports but I think most casual British football fans would sign up for that deal. Pad the schedule out with highlights, magazine shows and documentaries on all 20 clubs and they'd rake it in imo
Disco Posted Monday at 00:21 Share Posted Monday at 00:21 The issue for me always is “will and how much money will filter down the pyramid”. Current set up is ridiculous. There’s absolutely no way you should need to take out 3 subs to watch PL football legally. As a result pretty much everyone I know has a mix of legal and less legal channels to watch the games, you’d have to be a wealthy or daft person not too. Was at a weekend away with my in-laws a couple of weeks ago who are Leeds fans but not extremely online (the old lad is 90 odd tbf) and they were buzzing I could just pop the Leeds 3pm on the TV for them to watch… here’s the link for the future, knock yourself out. nufcjb Posted Monday at 08:23 Share Posted Monday at 08:23 (edited) Someone said earlier, we may lose Saturday 3:00pm kickoffs sooner rather than later. But, it.may already be gone as soon as next season onwards. 2025-2028 UK TV kickoff slots Friday 8:00 Saturday 12:30*, 5:30 Sunday 2:00, 4:30 Monday 8:00 *On TNT, the resr of the slots are held by Sky Time slots remain the same as now. But, EVERY Sunday 2:00pm kick off is LIVE. Doesn't matter whether it is a game moved because of teams playing in Europe or the game is picked by Sky, it will be live. That essentially means, Sky can load up their Sunday schedule. You'd probably be left with 1 or 2 games on Saturday 3:00pm but it's going to get even rare next season onwards. Kanj Posted Monday at 13:52 Share Posted Monday at 13:52 NFL’s model seems to work for the US where there are Amazon, Fox, CBS and ESPN sharing the general TV rights love with NFL itself selling “Sunday Ticket” where you can watch every Sunday 1 or 4p match and then an additional channel of Red Zone coverage that jumps all over the place to keep people interested without having to watch full matches. You could easily share the rights amongst your usual groups and PL could pump out (via their world feed they operate anyway) a package that allows people to see their favorite club or follow whatever they want. I am convinced there are enough people out there who will go see see live football of their favorite club no matter what is on TV
Exiled in Texas Posted Monday at 14:02 Share Posted Monday at 14:02 Losing the Sat 3pm game (and the early Sat kickoff) would affect the US ma4ket, as these games have found a great niche being played before the US football games start. They play when there are no other live sports games on and therefore have an uninterrupted market. Pushing the games to 5pm or later and your now competing with College Football on Saturdays, ad NFL on Sunday’s. Less eyeballs means less $$ for the US broadcast rights. Sharing games across networks doesn’t affect US viewers as the games are going out on over-the-air major TV channels which everyone has, so it’s not forcing people to buy multiple packages. Once NFL games go to Amazon, Peacock, Paramount etc, then it will be problematic trying to watch your team. plus the US is so large that they can split the games on NBC or FOZ by local market so that Dallas can watch the Cowboys and Detroit can watch the Lions even though they are both playing at 3pm on a Sunday. Wouldn’t that be great if ITV showed Newcas5le games in Tyne Tees are while Man UTD shown in Granada (if those TV regions still exist)

To see every NFL game this season you need a cable subscription, which would give you the networks plus ESPN and NFL Network, and then Prime, Peacock, and Netflix. English football has some unique considerations though.

Do you really think this has happened because they moved away from Highbury? Timing of it is just a coincidence, if they had built Emirates a decade earlier they still would have won the league multiple times under Wenger. Even if that was 100% true, it would be irrelevant in our case. Infrastructure spending wouldn't limit our spending on the team at all. There's probably an argument to build the new stadium now when it isn't part of the financial bullshit limits yet. I don't have a strong opinion on either direction and would love to stay at renovated SJP but I do recognise it's basically impossible to make SJP suitable for a regular top 4 club. Location means you can't expand it enough and the corporate stuff where the big money is would always be badly lacking compared to our peers. New stadium would still have to stay in the city centre and it would have to be within a walking distance from the centre. Stifler Posted Monday at 17:18 Share Posted Monday at 17:18 I’ve always argued that if we did have every Premier League match on TV, then it might be wise to do it by moving away from the 3pm’s. I’m not massively convinced that lower league, and non-league teams would take a hit. What was their attendance the weekend before the one just gone, compared to the weekend just gone, or the weekend before? Over the international break, women’s football filled the gap. 11k to see NUFC women’s. All the WSL, and Championship teams played at their clubs mains grounds. I’ve also argued that clubs should probably be doing non-league days. Imagine if SJP did a magic weekend style non-league weekend. You see 2 matches per day, could have North Shields vs whoever, West Allotment Celtic vs whoever on day 1, day 2 is Newcastle Benfield vs whoever, Morpeth vs whoever. £3 for kids, £5 for adults per day. Every year the teams change so everyone gets a chance to play at SJP and have a payday. On top of this, if the Premier League are earning such an increase in TV money, who’s to say you can’t just give grassroots football another £100m per season? That roughly translates to about £20k per team.
