LFEE Posted yesterday at 09:07 Share Posted yesterday at 09:07 Yeah the one problem with the arena site that gets overlooked is the new arena site is years behind schedule. Was meant to open last year yet other than ground prep there is no sign of anything emerging.

AyeDubbleYoo Posted yesterday at 09:15 Share Posted yesterday at 09:15 Are they even still building that arena beside the Sage? They’ve taken down the promotional hoardings and stuff.

We basically need to go full City, level the existing Arena and try and build a complex similar to what they have with Co-Op Live. You can then build out the restaurants, bars etc and really capitalise on hospitality and retail in an area which will get dual footfall. If we have European football, that’s an area that will get used a lot both on weekends and during the week.
Magpie Posted yesterday at 09:48 Share Posted yesterday at 09:48 My mate was telling me at the weekend that PIF have bought the firm that was responsible for building the new arena. So may well see some movement soon. Wonder if them wanting to accelerate the new arena build has anything to do with the potential location of the new stadium? 👀

They’ve taken down the promotional hoardings and stuff. It stopped because the war broke out in Ukraine and some supplies (I think steel) were due to come from there. It hasn’t started again and is now a lake with vegetation growing in it. It’ll be a big remedial job before they can even pick up where they left off. In the meantime the same company are investing in the current arena and we’re talking about the possibility of building a huge venue in the city centre. The market they were going after with the new build was huge gigs: Beyoncé, etc. Edited yesterday at 12:20 by Dr Venkman
AyeDubbleYoo Posted yesterday at 12:20 Share Posted yesterday at 12:20 That news story from November claims progress is still being made and the site is now ready for construction to start. We’ll see I guess, shame because something on that side would be amazing for the area.

Wilson Posted yesterday at 19:49 Share Posted yesterday at 19:49 I'm now at the point where I just want to know what's happening Always preferred to stay put but aware it's probably not feasible, so just hoping it's going to be a short move ie leazes. I think the arena site would be quality as it allows us to stay at home during the build but can't see it happening.

It’s still very unclear what we’ll get in March, I would imagine we’ll get a very good mock up of what a redevelopment of SJP will look like, but when it comes to a new stadium i’m unsure. Are we going to see the 2 options and then a period of consultation, if we see a mock up of the new stadium on a preferred site, it would suggest key stakeholders have been consulted on the said site surely ? Be interesting to see what reactions are to both plans if they are presented side by side.
Turnbull2000 Posted yesterday at 20:55 Share Posted yesterday at 20:55 (edited) A new ground on Leazes, and the existing site re-developed into a world-class sports campus and new park area would be the best thing in decades for the city. Sadly the planning system and the NIMBIES will likely prevent anything transformative and the city will continue to fall behind. This generations Dolly Potter and the swampies will be out in force the minute it’s announced, it’s up to the club to present a plan that the majority of Tyneside wants, creating new usable park space closer to the City Centre would be hard to argue against, whilst opening up Leazes Terrace. If the club go with Leazes Park they need a clear plan and determination to see it through unlike John Hall. Also, I think a rumoured £4bn investment from the stadium alone into Newcastle might put a bit of political pressure on them.

But, Dolly Potter didn't actually stop the 1997 Castle Leazes proposal, John Hall did by withdrawing the application when it was called-in for determination by the government. The Council were almost certainly going to approve the application if they hadn't had the determination called-in. It does seem that this government will be less likely to call-in an application though. Edited 22 hours ago by Jackie Broon
