St James' Park

Ignoring the transport point out of town stadia are universally soulless. The area around Wembley is dystopian - surrounded by endless chain bars and restaurants and without an iota of character. That's what you get if you build an out of town stadium and try to augment a place out of thin air. And that's in London with proper transport links. A new SJP would need to be surrounded by miles of windswept car parking - adding to the inherent awfulness.

There really is no need to sell our soul. Keeping the ground in walking distance from the Gallowgate is paramount for me. The Castle Leazes plan would have just about done that - and enhanced the setting of Leazes Park and Leazes Terrace. If we must rebuild that would be the only option we should pursue.

Keep it at 52k imo as SJP is a very unique stadium.  You could knockdown the east stand and increase capacity a little by stacking 2 terraces over each.

Yeap, just full of commercialised chained restaurants, hotels etc now.

One of my favorite topics - stadium expansion, renovation or new build. The infrastructure stuff is the topic I love to chat about.

I think revisiting the Castle Leazes plan is probably the way to go. Just want the current stadium either retained or repurposed to either be the academy/training or something similar.

Just bung the council a few brown envelopes to remove the restriction on rebuilding the east stand, increase the gallowgate as well to have a symmetrical ground with circa 60k capacity. Probably the cheapest option and could be completed in a year.

If you think having a city centre stadium causes congestion on matchdays it would be far, far worse having it outside the centre.

not

In the current location huge amounts of people get into the city on matchday via public transport. The centre of the city is served from everywhere. Metro from the coast, buses from the West End, trains from the Tyne valley - even walking in from likes of Jesmond. It's a natural orbital location from transport routes to end and makes it a very good, efficient and sustainable location. And because it's a city centre location people drift in during the day, some coming in early to eat or drink or shop, others turning up close to kick off. This controls the flow and arrival of people naturally.

I can't think of anywhere outside the city that is as remotely well placed for transport. If you move it out of a central orbit you have to provide direct transport routes. That causes an enormous bottle neck and would be horrendous for the road network because there would not be public transport infrastructure. And because it would be out of the centre everybody would go to the ground at exactly the same time after spending the day in town.

The current location is not just great for the setting (which is the best of any ground I've ever been to) and history - it's a very good location in general. It's an agglomerater which boosts the coffers of the city businesses - and this is reciprocated by boosting attendances. The location is one of the main reasons our crowds have been so good for so long.

The only thing that should even be considered is the 90s plan to move it onto Castle Leazes behind Leazes Park. Otherwise it should stay exactly where it is.

All very valid points. I agree, moving out of the city centre is probably not a great idea when you take all that into consideration. On match day you usually get fans streaming into the stadium from all parts of the city, would not want to lose that.

You might enjoy these posts that I made a few years back then, over on the "Newcastle Forum of Skyscraper City" . . .

Like I mentioned a few pages back. Do not forget. We are owned by a very rich owners who I'm sure have been involved in construction of bigger buildings than SJP.

All they need to do is splash some cash to hire the best engineers, architects, construction companies, lawyers and etc that money can buy and I'm sure they'll be able to keep SJP in its same location. It'd be an engineering marvel, deserving to be documented on the Nat Geo channel.

I'm pretty sure the owners do not want the stadium outside of the city and know its importance of staying where it is now.

The Saudi's are building the entire Neom city from scratch and spending $500bn on it

The Reuben's are highly successful property developers

Expanding / relocating a football stadium would be a piece of piss for the new owners

Exactly. Here we are, on a football forum, giving ideas on how we can increase SJP's capacity in its current location or even moving when we have owners who literally pay people to think the best for them and make it happen.

Fucking goosebumps man. Ever since I was a kid, I loved to dream and imagine how great SJP can look and be. Ashley took that enthusiasm away from me to the point that I once celebrated that we installed new dugouts during the Pardew years ffs. There was nothing to get excited about SJP during Ashley's reign.

And now, not only do we have cash rich owners, we have owners who are into buildings and construction and real estate. Imagine if we had skint owners who just tookover from Ashley with no ambition for SJP. It would have crushed dreams.

I don't know why people want to rebuild st james, i'd find it very sad to see it completely go. Maybe stands can be rebuilt but i find the ultra modern stadiums all look a bit bland and samey. Newcastle would look wrong without st james at the top.

leazes terrace - an issue even money cant overcome.

You'd be surprised how science and engineering can work these days. Forget brown envelopes. Thoe are things of the past.

I'm actually reading up and watching videos of what they want that new city Neom to be like. Building a city from scratch in the desert ffs. I heard about it back in 2020 but someone brought it up earlier and even the other day, that Manc Prof.Chadwick also mentioned it on SSN, this Neom city is actually a breathtaking project.

A rebuilding/expanding a stadium in a limited space/area project would be like building a spanking new bathroom for one of MBS' milkman for them. It'd be piss easy work for their engineers/architects/contractors with all the money, science and technology available to them. Really can't wait to know their plans

The issue with Leazes Terrace is not just engineering. You could certainly gain height vertically without having to touch the terrace itself with modern engineering. But the Grade I listing also gives huge weight to the historic setting of the listed terrace - which any increased scale would adversely effect. Not to mention the direct and immediate overshadowing and loss of light to the residents. I'm not sure building a bigger stand there would ever really be possible.

The Gallowgate is more possible although the metro station underneath makes it an expensive endeavour.

Aye. I love the way you get occasional unexpected views of it from all over town (particularly the one from the A193 between the two Shields Road roundabouts)

It's when you're on the train with away fans and you come round the corner on the Gateshead end of the King Edward Bridge and you hear them "Look at that!".
