For someone not from Newcastle - how far is the Arena to SJP and can a large ground be built on that site?

About 10mins walk but the land already has plans drawn up for it. These could change obvs.

You must walk at a canny lick! ?

You’re right about it already having plans drawn up though.

Lol will do . Would love a new stadium on Castle Leazes too but cant see them wanting to spunk a few hundred million on it .

A new stadium for us will easily be closer to a billion dollars ala Spurs stadium, I’d imagine. They won’t spare any expense if that’s the route they go.

edit: I also just looked up the newest football stadium in America, SoFi Stadium and that cost 5.5 billion.

So yeah a new one for us is going to run at least one bill easily.

What has given you the impression that the Saudi's would be reluctant to spend money? The $400m painting? The £1tn sideways skyscraper in the middle of the desert?

I think the planning permission is due to lapse soon.

In saying that, until they start developing it, it would likely be available for fee, just like the Strawberry land.

You would need to develop the whole area around it though, because it is fucking grim around all those garages.

Why would they need to ? Why spunk several hundred million on us if its not imperative as a way of us winning cups , leagues etc ?

Well the football argument is that rebuilding the stadium is a way to channel non-FFP funds into the club (by investing in "infrastructure") which can then create FFP income (via matchday, corporate and sponsorship income).

The "sportswashing" argument is essentially "We're Saudi Arabia, look what we can do".

We need a poll : Will St James Park be extended via

A. East stand

B . Gallowgate

C . Both

D. Not at all

E. New Stadium

C. I reckon they want a double tier on the east stand with a gap between the two tiers (light for cunts)  and the upper tier to integrate into a new upper gallowgate.

But they probably want to know what possibilities there are with the east stand because it impacts the gallowgate new build

A new stadium is most likely IMO. The Saudis aren’t here to mess around. Giving us a stadium as good as any in the league would a long way to cementing us amongst the elite. They’ll be playing it cautious because they know fans are attached the SJP and they’ll need the council on board with any plans.

You can 100% see why the arena site would appeal.  It’s still in the city centre (just), it takes roughly the same length of time to walk there as SJP does in terms of most of Newcastle’s pubs (I’m sure a key consideration for owners …), it’s much closer to the train station, and dramatic aerial shots above the ground on match days would have the city’s bridges lined up behind it.  It’s actually a more visually appealing location if done right.

Not saying we will move there.  But it wouldn’t be the worst idea.

It’s potentially a spectacular location with the river and bridges. Would also be a catalyst for huge investment in that area of the city.

Arena site is the only place that I think makes sense if moving becomes inevitable.

There’s going to be huge resistance to building next door, as there was in the 90s. I don’t think it’s a battle the owners will really want to have.

Not sure what the current state of the arena site is (heard loads of contradictory suggestions about who owns it, plans for it once the new Sage opens etc) but if they can get that entire area between the railway and Skinnerburn Road it should be plenty big enough. Absolutely phenomenal location too, even though that side of the Redheugh is pretty shabby. Loads of potential around that part of the city that you imagine the Reubens would be all over.

‘The Quayside Stadium’ has a good feel to it to me :)

Also a sponsors dream as train passengers would pass it en masse every day heading into Central.

If they went with a design like Mercedes’ Benz with a large window, they could frame a view of the bridges and river from inside the stadium.

They could build something that would be unique and best in class on that site.

Personally love the idea of the arena site. The club could run boats down the Tyne carry fans from as far as Shields. Build a dock/fanzone. Entering Newcastle via the Redheugh Bridge by car or train or metro for the home and away fans the view of the ground would look spectacular.

Always been a proponent of moving to the Arena site. Close to the train station. Amazing views coming into Newcastle via car or train. Get some life into that area of town. It’s practically begging to happen.

Feyenoord were going to build a new stadium on the waterfront and revitalise the surrounding area. Let the Reubens at it in Newcastle.
