It's obvious really, but it struck me the other day that when Carroll was refused an increased wage, it might have been more financially possible if we still didn't have that leech Smith draining 60k a week out of the club for doing nothing. :(

Well maybe indirectly, in that we would be better off financially if we hadn't previously given so many big contracts to shite players. But we still wouldn't have changed the policy on wages for Carroll.

Can't see us selling Tiote, we only just signed the fucking guy.

Wonder how long it'll be before I open a player thread and it isn't about him being definitely sold in the summer?

How longs he's been on the books is meaningless. The club will be able to make a massive profit on him and that's all that matters.

Get used to it. We used to be a club who bought players for large fees, give them massive career fulfilling contracts, and then could never get rid of them.

We are now a club who aims for players on lower fees, on lower wages, but with potential to be a hell of a lot better. It is a natural consequence of the second option that we will worry about the players we sign who turn out to be great player, and then leave for bigger and better clubs.

Do it consistently enough for a long period of time and you might get lucky and hit the sweet spot between the Arsenal model and the Man Utd model!

I just don't agree we'll be looking to sell players per se.

If Enrique doesn't want a new contract or he wants Champions League football then fair enough, he's at the end of his contract so the club might decide to cash in. But I don't think we'll be selling players like Tiote who have only recently signed deals the club finds affordable.

I know everyone believes that Mike Ashley is out to ship out all our players and replace them with casino dealers or something, I just don't see much reason to believe that.

Anyway, this has been done to death in almost every thread, so sorry!

It has got f*** all to do do with club ambition when you have a world class player on your hands.

If you have a player better than many left backs in the Champions League, then they are not going to commit to a club like Newcastle because they believe they might get there in 10 years time. The only reason they MIGHT do that is through a sense of club loyalty, or if they are promised they will be allowed to leave if a proper bigger club comes in for them (i.e. not Villa or Liverpool)

But why shouldn't a club in our position be signing 2 or 3 other class players? We're a Premier League club 4 points off 6th spot. A club like us should have been keeping Carroll and splashing money on someone like Luis Suarez. The likes of Jose would be staying then. That is what I mean by lack of ambition. But when I say 'club' I mean 'owner' of course.

I'm not saying it is a bad thing, I prefer the fact that we managed to buy under-rated players who perform well for us and generate a lot of interest. Anyone who thinks we (as a newly promoted club) can unearth gems like Tiote, Enrique, hopefully Ben Arfa, and can resurrect Barton's career, and manage to keep all of them, is not realistic, and should refrain from Football Manager for a bit.

Give me an example of another recently promoted club who unearthed players of that quality and managed to keep them for longer than a season, and I will stand corrected.

I'm not complaining about the selling of the players, if it happens.

I'm complaining about the ruining of a perfectly decent season by people constantly talking about a player as if he's gone.

Promise I won't post this again, but can't we at least try to fucking enjoy the good players we've got without constantly using them as a way to snipe at Mike Ashley?

Sevilla thrived under a similar policy (buy cheap, sell high) after getting promoted. They sold Sergio Ramos, Reyes, Baptista... and yet went on to win two back-to-back UEFA cups. But their transfer record during the period is unbelievable. Daniel Alves for 500k? Julio Baptista for €3m? Luís Fabiano for €3.5m?

Not a swipe at Ashley/Lambias. Just a dose of realism about how the modern game works. It is exactly the same for every club who isn't Man City or Chelsea. Arsenal go through the same thing every summer with Fabregas. Liverpool have just had it with Torres. As soon as the club can't match the player, they're off.

Which is why I definitely agree with you. Enjoy the likes of Tiote, Enrique playing for us. If they go, then so be it. It means we made a great signing rather than a Boumsong.

Eventually if we do it consistently enough, then less players will move, more will stay, and that is how the club develops. It happens slowly and sustainably.

We will moan a bit on the message boards, but in the short term I would rather everyone was moaning about our relatively obscure signings turning into great players and leaving, than our relatively obscure signings drawing £60K per week and fading into oblivion.

But Mike only sells players reluctantly once they have submitted a transfer request!!!!

And I will happily bet that Tiote will stay in the summer unless he submits a transfer request, at which point he will be sold for a silly amount.

Refer to my earlier post, if a player gets his head turned and wants to move on, all that a club can do is maximise the sale price and try and appease the fans.

Well that's fair enough, but I'm pretty sure that's not how it's normally argued on here!

Player and manager both playing charades in public. I know I've been really negative recently but I actually expect the worst now.

He's off this summer. I expect him to leave in the summer for about £10m. (I'll be delighted if he stays though because he could become the best LB in the league quite easily)

I'll be disgusted if he goes for anything less than 15m frankly.

Leeds and Pompey do NOT have our crowd potential or drawing power.

Still, we can always settle for second best instead of 3rd best, eh !?

Leeds and NUFC's problems were the result of having a complete dickhead in charge instead of only a partial one..

you just don't want to get it do ya ? it doesn't matter what the size of crowds, turnover or prestige of club,'crowd potential or 'drawing power'......if you try to live too far beyond your means you'll end up fucked. the only difference is the size of the numbers, the premise is the same for all.
