Is Mike Ashley steering Newcastle United in the right direction?
madras replied to LooneyToonArmy's topic in Football
I’d say it was more a case of those who are confusing our ‘successes’ this season with a well run club and think Ashley has turned into Jack Walker because we bought a few bargain basement players in January, and those who want to see clear tangible evidence the club is heading in the right direction before they can forget about three years of half truths and abject mismanagement. You might think being top of this league is proof we’re heading in the right direction, but others think it’s a fluke and in the absence of any hard facts about what Ashley’s plan was last summer you’re in no position to say what’s rational and what isn’t. Ultimately time will settle this debate, and until it’s had its say perhaps you should get off your high horse. paragraph 1........what a few are saying is that without him we may not be here as the club was well on the way to being f***ed before he worked out his calculations on the back of a beermat somewhere. paeagraph 2..........if he should get off his high horse as time will settle this debate then maybe you ought to put your poisoned dagger away aswell. I don’t have a poisoned dagger. I have point of view you don’t like. so why should he get off his high horse because he has a pointof view you dont like. you are the one that said time would tell. -
Being the sad guy that I am, I've been through the World Cups of 1990-2006 and I can't find any others who fit the bill. Trick question? I've gone back as far as 1982-still f*** all that I can see.....how long ago did he play Fab? i think "premiership" gives it away billy. edit...in my own mind i'm convinced the last one isn't english.

so it's not me personally then ?

Aside from the age 17 point, which is like 'well of course, thats obvious' I don't think that's true. He'd just get a different kind of stick, more the Xisco kind of stick. No, there’s a definite section of our support who believe foreign kids must be world beaters in the making and local lads must be s****. And there's others that think because a player's foreign that they're s***. So vice versa really. Which is my point. neither...............however there are many who make their mind up on a player within one game and it takes a lot to change their minds after that.

He's only had almost 3 years, how much longer does he need? well hasnt he been tolerable this season, major fuckups not really around willing to spend cash in jan to ensure promotion if llambias could f*** off everything would be fine I’d say the renaming of the ground was a f*** up, as was starting season without a permanent manager. The meagre spend in January is given far too much credit. Ashley spent the absolute bare minimum he thought he could get away with to cover any possible injuries problems. When we were looking good for promotion under KK the board went out and spent serious money on Andy Cole, who went on to serve us well in the PL until he was sold for a 400% profit. This time we went out and bought Best for next to nought, we couldn’t even compete with Wigan for Moses. Or, looked at without the gosh-how-I-miss-my-Fweddie glasses on, during that transfer window we were probably the most active club in the top two divisions in terms of getting players in. I think you’ll find SJH was in charge of the purse strings last time we went up. Not that it matters, my point was (until you tried to turn this into another debate about Shepherd, you’re obsessed with him) that the investment in January wasn’t the big w*** fest it’s frequently made out to be. all people said was that we bought well, not that it was the best window ever. you'll rememebr in that summer under hall many weren't happy that our only signing was beardsley (allen only coming in because of beardsleys injury) No, it’s put forward as evidence that he’s learnt from his mistakes. When in fact it could just as easily be another variation on the short sighted minimum investment policy that got us relegated. The failure to land Moses is interesting. A highly rated young player who Hughton said we were after who ended up at Wigan. Was it the £2.5m price tag that scuppered our attempt to sign him, or was he attracted by the bright lights of Wigan? Or perhaps we couldn’t match the wages Wigan were offering. Whichever way you look at it looks like NUFC weren’t interested in building for next season. yes the moses thing was ineteresting...perhaps they didn't want to pay what they considered to be over the odds (like most every other prem team bar wigan) Or perhaps they aren’t prepared to pay the market rate and we will only sign players our competitors in the PL aren’t interested in. Hughton himself said ‘our efforts to sign Moses is a combination for now and the future. The most important thing is to get promoted, but there has also been an eye on the future’. And then our eye on the future was scuppered by Wigan and their outrageous wage structure. If we can't compete with big spending Wigan the quality of player we bring in is unlikely to move the club forward. We’ll get promoted and that will be the end of our progress - which some will no doubt find highly amusing. or maybe he just wanted too much. even if its wigan if someone wants more than you think they are worth you don't do it. At the end of the day Wigan got Moses and we got Best. A million maybes doesn’t change that, or what happens on the pitch. This season has been a great example of how wages influence results. How Hughton would have fared if he’d had to operate within Scunthorpe’s wage structure we’ll never know, but it’s looking like we find out how good he is at managing the division’s poor relations over the next few years. do you know if best or moses are on the bigger wage ? as for the rest it'll make a change to underperforming at an unmanagable wage structure.......................unless of course you think the banks would have let us borrow more ? -
he knows good dogging spots on merseyside and west london ?

Has this really bothered anybody? Don't think I've thought about this once since that initial week. 30,000+ signatures on the NUST petition suggests it did. well the name still changed. does it hurt you or do you not really realise ? -

i'd really hoped watford was a turning point in away games in that we dominated. these two games coming up are massivly important and he ahs to get it right not so much in team selection but in mentality.

i heard they just bought the english leagues top scorer and didn't realise he was a man of colour till he stepped off the plane.

I think he was signed because at the time Hughton wasn't entirely comfortable with having to rely on Carroll and Ranger as target men, having lost Harewood. This was before Carroll went on his insane goal scoring streak and without hindsight I don't think anyone would have predicted it. yip. plus if he fails we'll still be able to get shot for more than we paid for him. also he's hardly had a chance yet to lead the line, instead playing off a front man which isn't his natural game, poor, poor start but far too early to be making out he's as bad as some are.

Nah. Clue, he's retired. Mr Shearer

i hope he doesn't look in. he'll get another tumour reading that.

Shouldn't be to much of a problem if Guthrie can keep his form up, and Jonas and Routledge start.. Don't be daft, man. We're as good as down to ten men if that happens. aye, if guthries instructed to play it safe. -
I'll post this as a Scunthorpe fan, which is difficult to do right now. That was easily our worst performance of the season. Absolutely gutless performance; they just didn't turn up. It was always going to be one way traffic, but they looked like they didn't even care. Missing your best defender (Mirfin) and your best striker (Hooper) doesn't help, but add to that a right back who should be back playing college football in america, and a centre back who wouldn't look out of place in Sunday league football, it was always going to be a big defeat. There was a huge argument after the match between the players. Think they already know they're down, and no there's a rumour Hooper is out for the season. Had a decent night our after the match though, after I'd recovered from my vertigo. aye.some lads in the bar beforehand were saying 3 or 4 nil and they'd take it if they got no more injuries for more important games they might get points from.

Aye, Carroll's a Newcastle player too isn't he?... To my knowledge, Best has never glassed anyone in a bar. And what has that got to do with footballing ability? is that all that matters ? doesn't matter how much of a twat someone is providing they play well...think the sameof john terry ?

What a fantastic comparison Hiddink PSV Eredivisie Winner : 1986–87, 1987–88, 1988–89, 2002–03, 2004–05, 2005–06 KNVB Cup Winner : 1988, 1989, 1990, 2005 European Cup Winner : 1988 Real Madrid Intercontinental Cup Winner : 1998 Chelsea FA Cup Winner (1): 2009 Netherlands UEFA Euro 1996 Quarter Finals 1998 FIFA World Cup Fourth Place South Korea 2002 FIFA World Cup Fourth Place Australia 2006 FIFA World Cup Second Round Russia UEFA Euro 2008 Semi Final Keegan Newcastle United Football League Division One: Champion 1992–93 Fulham Football League Second Division: Champion 1998–99 Manchester City Football League Division One: Champion 2001–02 England Euro 2000 : Group Stages I think the fact you are pretending I'm comparing Keegan & Hiddink as manager's in terms of achievements says it all, your not reslly interested in having a sensible conversation are you? More interested in your ' eeee god look how far out he is '. I was comparing how ANY manager would have felt when Dennis Wise told them the Gonzalez story. I'm sure someone like Hiddink would not accepted stuff like that, like most managers. I think you already knew that, but were still sad enough to dig up every detail of the cv's of both managers. unfortunatly i doubt the gonzalez stroy is a rarity and anyone who thinks managers will have the final say in all comings and goings is naive. IIm sure its not, but this was when the squad was desperately short in certain area's, only a day before the transfer window shut, and when any trust you would have with your DOF would be broken ("Ive got a great player for you"). And Im sure that that any other favour's to other ganets in football at least get returned (where were the south american wonder kids in January?). Its not exactly impressive stuff (to say the least) for any manager who is serious about taking the club forward. thats why i've always asked about the players keegan wanted. he wanted modric, the players agents chose not to, apparently we had a deal set up for derdiyok which keegan stopped, guthrie he got, bassong was wises deal when he wasn't playing then keegans when he was doing well, rumours persist over schweinsteiger, would all have been well had he signed ? if so, the story goes he just decided to stay in germany after agreeing terms etc, keegan seemed very happy about gutierrez and confused about coloccini. until we know about the way other players were brought in and who keegan actually wanted then to me it looks like yes, keegan was correct in his constructive dismissal but the vast majority of other managers put up with similar and understand it as part of the job.
