I think there’s more to longstaff and willock this season, both very young and with Howe’s coaching hopefully we see better contributions from both of these lads.

He was a pure alpha for us when on loan, he took every chance he got and went fully at it - he dribbled with intent, he pressed with intent, attacked chances in the box and genuinely acted like he was our talisman. He was nothing like that under Bruce (and hurt) but I’m hoping he believes in himself more like he did when he was on loan that this season when he’s called upon this season.

I do find the quiet/pause period to be a little frustrating more than anything (and before anyone says “chill out, remember Ashley period?” Yes, I do remember, I remember every period since I’ve been a fan…) — I was just expecting a little more of the January aggressive attempts versus the more chilled approach. All good, I expect them to get some deals done - we desperately need a starting caliber right winger, an attacking midfielder who is as much a dribbler/driver with the ball, passer/creative, and goal scorer (Paqueta PLZ ffs) with versatility to slot in the front 3 if possible, and a backup or competing striker to Wilson (if that’s Sesko or Zapata or DCL) as we need goals. I know they don’t want to get mugged, and I do trust Ashworth, Howe and the Board but I really want to continue the momentum of last season and really kick on. Few injuries to the key players and we’re going to be sweating until January and kicking ourselves or not getting some deals done. On the commercial side, they will no doubt get the income level to back the spend in - whether that’s later, it will happen. (Can PIF stop pissing about with LIV and upsetting the PGA and throw some dough our way a bit, get 1/3 bit as aggressive and sign some fuckers?)

I think hiring a proper General Counsel in-house is simply the club building the proper corporate structure as to 1) not have to spend insane amount of per-hour legal fees to outside counsel 2) an internal legal resource that will be part of every major decision and looking at risk mitigation at every angle and 3) all major corporations have at least a GC to work without outside counsel ie: this guy will be working far closer with a DeMarco versus the business people on the Board, CEO, Ashworth etc. I wouldn’t look at it any other way though. Just smart practices.

IDK mate, he was specifically name checked by Howe at the end of the season and there’s been just as much smoke about yes/no on him and the price being very high for there not be a strong level of interest at the right price and very plausible we are waiting it out. It’s been said multiple times by the various journalists that if an opportunity arises at some point to sign someone earlier, they very well could pull the trigger and get it done.

We were throwing out 30-40m bids on center backs in Jan. We were throwing out similar value bids for other players that didn’t materialize then and this summer. the lol’s and smug comments and the ha ha’s are so strange and unnecessary.
