It requires pace and close control, Martins doesn't have the control. Which means that in a situation where he needs to keep the ball reasonably close to him (with a defender in front of him, or in the case you mention a goal keeper) he has to slow right down to manage it.

Also passing to a team mate is not the same thing as being able to pass through a defence for a team mate to run on to, something none of the three you mentioned have been able to do. Still I agree with part of what your saying. Even if we bought someone like Elano he would be wasted in the massive majority of games with the way Allardyce wants his team to "play". However I think last night he would have made a world of difference.

sure you were there as it wasn't a s*** performance (s*** result i'll grant ya),not agreat performance but better then derby and birmingham,pompey and liverpool. at times tonight we played attacking football with plan and passion. we didn't get the result we deserved (a draw against a team with 1 away win this season). Being a better performance then Derby doesn't make it a good performance, or even a decent one, and no I wouldn't agree in the slightest that it was better then Birmingham (which was still poor). The first half was a decent performance, the second a disgrace, averaged it was a very poor performance against a terrible away team. Yes we were unlucky, be that doesn't excuse the shit that we saw in the last 55+ minutes of the game.

Dude come on ... It's because our players are awful. You can't let them off the hook so easily. It's Martins and Duff who are the only two players who might scare another teams defence at the moment. After that we have nothing. Todays premiership won't allow for a lack of athleticism and pace in attack like we have right now. Name one team who is having some success in the premiership right now who has players as slow and unathletic as we do! NONE! Our attacking players stink and thats a fact. No manager can work with this crap. No one. Even Readings Doyle and Kitson are better than Viduka and Owen. It's bloody embarrassing. Who would you rather have Reading's Hunt or Milner? We've played reasonably well (really well compared to most of our other games this season). We've actually tried to play Football and been unlucky not to score on a few occasions. If only N'zogbia had finished midway through the game that would have been a candidate for goal of the season. Overall I'm disapointed, but only with the ref who's been terrible (Onoua should have gone, Elano probably should have gone and the free kick he gave to Corluka for a pathetic dive just capped off his performance). We're extremely unlucky and hopefully we can push on and get something in the second half.

I'm sure a lot of people on here could do better then the fat man at the moment when it comes to simply picking a team/formation. Just a pitty none of us would have any idea how to do the rest of the job

Unfortunately football is just a tad more difficult than that. No it isn't, to do really well you need more then that obviously, but to do better then Sam is at the moment all that's required is back to basics.

And this would be based on what exactly? How could he do worse? Play Shay Given up front?, because that might just be Allardyces next brain wave Seriously to do better then Allardyce all that is required is to not think your a tactical genius and instead just use a basic formation with everyone in there best position and say "go and play".

Where are the stark similarities between Allardyce's start here and O'Niels at Villa? Both being in there first season at a new club with new owners is the only real similarity that stands out to me. One difference that immediately stands out is that O'Niel actually improved the team in his first season, finishing five places higher then they'd finished the season before. Allardyce will be very lucky to finish in the same position as we finished under Roeder, probably lower.

We've always played better against the top sides. But we've still aways gotten far more points from the lesser teams. IMO we're going to finish around 14th this season unless Allardyce changes his ways.
