After committing a rash challenge which he was booked for he picked up the ball, walked away with it, then shoved it into Gayle's stomach. Nor the referee or the linesman saw it, but the 4th official did. He could easily have been sent off for that alone as the force he did with could be classed as assault. This. Should have been a red on its own for violent conduct, credit to the 4th official for getting involved though

Seriously needs to look at what he is contributing to the team at the moment. He should be one of our key players but more often than not has disappeared (other than constant complaining/appealing) for weeks now

We looked like the team who started the season and had no idea how to get the ball from defence to the attacking players. They looked like two separate teams at times today. Shelvey taking the ball from the defenders and starting attack is so key to the way we play. I lost count of the times we just passed it round at the back and they just waited till we gave it back. As a result Anita, Hayden and Dummett looked terrible when they aren't ball players and shouldn't be asked to start attack. It's not like we haven't known the ban was coming and plan Bs and Cs should have been worked on for months. It's going to be a long month if we suddenly have to find a new way to play or change the way certain players play That al said Richie has been appalling for over a month now and needs to look at what he is contributing. Pointing at things, appealing for everything and whinging like a bitch isn't enough.

If Fat Sam goes to Palace I think thats another team that Sunderland wont finish above

Just back home. Terrible game, terrible performance, terrible atmosphere, great 3 points! Reminded me of some of the early games of the season where it doesn't feel comfortable (as a fan) doing the bare minimum and winning comfortably. The concern always for me is if the opposition scores we won't be able to pick the performance level up to compete. The whole game felt a bit pointless (like we were always going to win) but it was great walking away from there with a win knowing we won't be back for a long long time. That said I'll settle for the same again at Burton!

What did the TV say/show of the Lascelles bottle incident? There was absolutely no intent from him but as he quickly threw it off the pitch it sailed about ten rows back into the crowd. Him apologising brought it to the refs attention but the officials didn't see it at all

Zaha going to ACON with Ivory Coast now, maybe Townsend will get a game now

Presumably that stat is still warped by the aftermath of the one derby game

If Sunderland had won they would be below them in the table.

Has there been a recent (last 20 years) player that had left us and went on to better things? Hamman is the only one I could think of
