John Alder & Liam Sweeney - Memorial Garden unveiled at SJP reception

Been a bit of a mess today, but have finally managed to get some coherent words out. When I had a ST between 2006 and 2008 I sat next to Liam and his brother Mark in the south west corner. Forever the optimist, every game Liam would bet on a 3-0 win, with Milner scoring the first goal. I remember those goals where he hugged me so hard that I lost my glasses. I remember standing and singing next to him when Shearer broke the club scoring record. I remember him taking me around the rock bars of Newcastle, missing my train back to York and kipping on his sofa. I remember him smuggling me into West Ham away on a kids ticket. Although we'd lost touch over the last few years as my attendance at the match has become more and more sporadic, I'll always remember him, the mad bastard. Thoughts are with his brother and the rest of his family. RIP. -
liked the bit about "swinging on the bar" well no, you have to touch the ball or be in the line of vision or cause some interference. it's handy if a sports journo knows the rules of the sport theyare reporting on. Howay man, if the refs don't know the rules, why should the media?

Who was it that said earlier he could be our new Rob Lee? I really miss Rob Lee. As highly rated as he is, I still think the era that he played in with Beardsley and Cole probably washed away what would otherwise have been the focal point of our comments and conversations from that time. Magnificent player, I loved him. I'd love to know how many goals he scored in the 94 calendar year. Was absolutely on fire in the latter half of 93-94 and first half of 94-95. From memory alone, he scored between 12-15 goals in 1994. He scored a lot in the last few months of the 93-94 season and carried on in that vein until the 1-1 draw against Liverpool at home. What a footballer he was. He scored for fun in the first half of that season where we blew the title. Along with Ferdinand he went into his shell a bit in the second half of the season. If those two had finished the season like they started it we'd have walked the league. He was basically the best player in the world for a month., capped off with that goal on his England debut.
