Safety first, and you can't really argue with the result I suppose. I just think with Ritchie and Gouffran as wide men, you need overlapping full backs if you want to play more incisive football from the back. With those 2 as wingers you need overlapping fullbacks if you want any width at all. I just think we found it difficult to create too much as a result. All a bit through the middle and mostly in front of their CB pairing.

Thought we were pretty bad from the wide positions. Ritchie and Gouf did nothing of note and Anita and Dummett never offered an option nor an overlap.

Don't agree They are too similar imo. We need to sign another midfielder who is willing to break into the opposition box more. That would involve replacing both Hayden and Shelvey then. Shelvey isn't the type to protect his back 4. I'm all for replacing players with better players but it's odd to look at our season so far and decide we definitely need to replace our starting midfield pair in order to make any progress.

I think Lascelles, Hanley and Clark are all the same height iirc.

Diame and Gouf to play for 60-70 minutes before being replaced by Perez and Atsu.

Could never be trusted to get tight to his man. Gets turned too easily. Good positionally though as long as he stays back. Glad he's here, like.

He was a bit in and out of the game in the 1st half but got a lot more involved in the 2nd. Got in the box well too. I get the feeling he hasn't quite bought into the whole team ethic thing yet. Hopefully he gives in to it and becomes a cracking player for us.

I think he brings in the other players better than Gayle. It helps the team attack more as a unit. Also, he's quicker than i thought (although not fast) but then, Gayle is actually slower than i thought he would be (while still being pretty quick).

Don't agree with Stray Mackem about a few things, football nor politics, but he's a decent poster IMO. He's going to be loyal to his feelings, pro Sunderland. That's totally expected. But he's an individual and representative of anyone but himself.

Wasn't there some stat somewhere (i can't find it) whereby it showed that if you score 5 or more goals in a game you are more likely to have a very low scoring game in the next? I'm sure i remember this. It just showed a trend towards that.

This guy can't play every game but we'll look considerably worse without his range of passing. We haven't got anyone else who plays it forward so confidently from midfield.
