I see a lot of people just don't understand what this thread is about. Nevertheless, I stand by my position. Given a hypothetical choice, I would rather be relegated with the promise of having a new manager than stay up and keep Kinnear for three years.

Here's an interesting theory someone put to me by the way. How would you react if the board decided to install Beardsley as temporary manager?

The choice of Kinnear gets criticised a lot, but there were particular circumstances. Keegan had walked, Ashley had decided to sell up in order to appease the fans, and we needed someone who was prepared to step into what seemed a very temporary position. There weren't going to be too many willing candidates. It boils down to who you consider to be at fault for bringing about that desperate situation in the first place. But that's another debate. Appointing Kinnear as temporary manager was understandable, perhaps even wise. Keeping him on after deciding not to sell was questionable. Offering him a long-term contract despite the fact that he's almost dropped dead is inexcusable idiocy.

What gives you the belief that he'll be sacked if he preforms poorly? Surely not the fact that he's taken us closer to relegation than Roeder or Souness ever did, nearly dropped dead, and yet is still getting a three year contract?

Keeping Kinnear is certain relegation within the term of his contract. There's no point avoiding relegation this season if it's coming anyway next year.

If Ashley had any intention of sacking him any time soon, he wouldn't be offering him 3 years regardless of our Premiership status in the first place. Job probably wouldn't be in danger unless we dropped to League one.

Simple hypothetical question. If a supreme being offered you a choice between relegation and sacking Kinnear and staying up and keeping him, how would you choose? Not even a dilemma for me, I'd take relegation any day. In the Championship with a new manager, there's at least a chance that we'll rebuild strongly and come straight back up. Going from a Championship club to mid-table Premiership again isn't easy, but the gap is far from insurmountable. However, even if we were to stay up, we are guaranteed relegation within the next 2~3 season with the worst manager in England's top two divisions at the helm. There is simply no hope under Joe Kinnear. I realize that it's kind of pointless asking this when in all likelihood, we're probably getting both

I've been to stadia in a 4 countries where alcohol is served and I've honestly never had any problems. There are very few people with enough money + low enough tolerance to get seriously inebriated with $10 a pint beer, and stewards drag away anyone who does end up visibly drunk. I just appreciate not having to run over to a bar before the match and being able to sip a beer while I actually watch. You don't know how convenient it is until you've actually done it I suppose.

Owen's gone the way of Duff imo. Legs are gone, permacrock, very occasionally shows flashes of the player he used to be. I think we'll see him go to a surprisingly unglamorous club in the summer.

Given the choice, I'd rather have a winger with pace, dribbling ability and a cracking cross on him playing in the side rather than another very average player who's only real achievement is scoring three or four free kicks past us (and only us) in recent seasons. However, as with Zog's French left wing compatriots before him, i.e. Ginola and Robert, a good manager will bring out the dazzling French winger in them, a rubbish one will turn them into lazy, selfish, non-performing French whingers. So I'd only want him if we had a manager capable of, well, managing him, something which obviously is beyond Kinnear's comprehension. If Zog goes back to the form he showed during his breakthrough season, then £6m + Taylor will have been a poor deal for a player who in a single cross can do more than what his "superior" senior Duffers struggles to do in a dozen matches. I've decided to stop reading any posts that mention Ginola, Robert, and N'Zogbia in the same breath. I mean seriously might as well say that Carroll is going to be the next Shearer because he's a striker and a Geordie.

I'd rather have someone like Taylor who offers something significant (if not as flashy) every game, rather than someone like Insomnia who does something fabulous maybe three time a season and spends the rest of the time moping and asking for a transfer. 6m+Taylor for Zog was a fabulous deal imo.
