Recent (or Relegation) Form Having travelled to Anfield on the back of 3 League defeats and a draw at home against Middlesbrough, Newcastle's confidence had taken a massive blow, and this showed even more after they went 1-0 down after a lucky deflection from Liverpool's Jermaine Pennant. Minutes later Torres made it 2 as the first half drew to a close and only 6minutes after the interval Torres played a nicely weighted through ball to Steven Gerrard who made it 3-0. The only excitement the travelling Toon support had was when substitute Obafemi Martins' left footed strike struck the crossbar in the 68th minute, but even that just bounced clear and added to Newcastles misery. After conceding another 3 goals yesterday at the hands of Liverpool, Newcastle now have the worst run of form in the league over the last 6 games (LDLLLL) and only running out with 6points from the next two games can secure a bit of stability in the Newcastle dressing room. It is becoming forever clearer that Newcastle for the first time in their Premiership history are getting well and truelly drawn into a relegation battle and the next two games are now '6-pointers', not to mention the home game against the unwashed. Down But Not Out Now ask yourself the following questions; Is this the worst position you have seen Newcastle in? If no, How old were you/How long ago were we in a worse position? and finally.... How do we, as supporters ("the loyalist football supporters, the world has ever had") play our part in avoiding relegation? The answer is simple enough, don't 'boo' your team off after an uninspiring display. Don't let your head drop in the stands as soon as a good chance goes begging, and DON'T give up hope. This is your call, this is your opportunity to prove to the world that "Newcastle United, Will Never Be Defeated" and this is YOUR opportunity, to give all that Southern Media, all those who want to see us fail, and all those that question our support a nice Geordie wake-up call. So get behind the lads, we may have won f*** all since 69 (inter-city fairs cup), we may not be the team we were under Keegan in his first spell as Manager, BUT we are the same supporters of this HUGE football club that turn up every week, and keep it alive. It is OUR job to be the alarm clock, and wake this giant from the lowest pit it has been in for over a decade. This particular tale was a good 10 years ago now. We travelled down to Sheffield Wednesday, quite a few of us, and all the usual matchday banter made the trip enjoyable, despite it seeming like ages because I was only about 8. One of my Dad's mates, being the person he is, decided that he would take yet another of his obscure foods on board the bus. This time, it would be the turn of the Garlic Octopus. Halfway down there, Jonny decided to open up the jar which contained the Garlic Octopus' (Octopi? ) and everyone almost immediately felt sick. We got to the outskirts of Sheffield when we pulled over to get a Police escort. When we pulled over my Dad suggested that we stretch our legs, so off I trotted down the bus. When I got off I asked the Policeman to take us to the nearest pub which at the age of 8 was quite amusing, and funnily enough the Policeman did it. So the booze got flowing in the pub, and I had a sip or wo of my Dad's beer and whisky. Then Jonny decided that it was time for a practical joke. The next round was bought, and everyone drank a good half or 3 quarters of their pint. One Garlic Octopus remained in the jar, that was...until Jonny put it in his pint. He then proceded to take it to the bar, and ask "here mate, what the fuck is this in my pint!?!?" and the bloke was shocked and horrified then quickly poured him a brand new pint for nothing. It was fucking great. The final part which I remember was being inside Hillsbrough and banging the wooden seats to get songs going. It was a great day out...especially at the age of 8.

I think your getting two trips mixed up mate. Wasn't Souness' last game a night time kick off when we lost 3-0? Because I was at that one as well as the one you mentioned above. Afterwards there was a little bit bother apparently, and then some Police Woman on a Horse charged at us so we had to quickly get on the coach, there was no need for her to do it either. We were only on backpage with a bunch of miserable gits anyways. They were just being arsey. I remember there was a minute silence at the game the year after, that you are talking about, when we got the scarves. It was 0-0 and on remembrance day and about 3,000 geordies held out their scarfs for the silence, it looked fucking immense...then from their the whole thing went boring.

This is NOT about the scores or games as such, it is more about the funny, dangerous, brilliant or just plain wierd experiences you have had on the road supporting the toon. I will add my own later on, which includes tales of garlic octopus and the dressing up of greek statues..... Add your own and share the joy so to speak....

Flags on sticks aren't banned. Only if the stick is over a metre long may it be banned as it does not fit within the guidelines of the safety laws and regulations. Or so we were told by stweards in and around the Gallowgate/East Stand Corner when we got ourselves in their for the Barnsley game. Banners are fine as long as they aren't deemed offensive, covering the advertising or if the club doesn't like them, i.e. Sampdoria fans got told to take down their "football's not for cooperates" (or something like that) banner down pre-season because the club didn't like the idea. Nice flags by the way. Just wondering if any of you don't mind you could whack up some ideas for flags in here and I'm sure some of the 'Toon Ultras' will be willing to make them and use them.

And just for the record, I KNOW it isn't only the Ultras that sing. 'The corner' is the best place in the ground for atmosphere, as it sometimes gets the whole crowd going.

i have never seen a better atmosphere in an all seated SJP than a standing SJP, So to me that would suggest standing means a hell of alot to an atmosphere. Also no one rely's on the ultras for an atmosphere most just take the piss out of them which yet again proves my point about how less people care about atmosphere. As for one game when the ground was buzzing woopdyfuckingdoo. and for anyone wondering i sit in the gallowgate upper and aint a toon ultra but the stick they get off some people is embarrassing. Cheers for backing us mate. Can I really ask why we get so much stick too? What difference is there between us and the Leazes/Gallowgate ends of the past, or other singing sections. We are just doing what half of you used to do, but we have to be an organisation now to do it, due to the lack of singing sections. People should f*** off home if they don't like an atmosphere or want to ridicule those that do want one. But that's only my opinion, no offence anyone. You sort of answered your question 3 sentences later. Try to avoid telling your fellow Newcastle spectators to 'f*** off' and you might just win a few more friends. Just an idea like... Tidied. Anyhoo, it was an indirect comment aimed at people in general not the members of this forum. Besides, why would I be bothered about offending people who offend me? If people ridicule lads who want to "bring back the noise" they obviously don't care too much about the atmosphere, so why would I need/want them on my side if they aren't going to help?

Were you singing with a lad who was standing on the stairs next to you? Your spot on with everything you say there like. Middle tier of the leazes. If your looking towards the pitch I was like to the left of the goal. Kept standing, singing then sitting for 5minutes, and cheers.

I sat in my seat in the gallowgate, and aye, I was giving it my best, as per usual. You's are normally louder. Not a sarcy comment at all. Apologies, it was just how I interpreted it. Fair play, at least your trying to get the atmosphere going.

It wasn't at the time though. I would consider 'kids' to be like 15 and younger, most of the lads there were 16-23.

Well it would be quite hard to get songs going when 3,000 Man United fans are singing over the top of like 300 Ultras/people near the Ultras. The whole ground just went dead after they scored. I myself was singing with the same bloke for 5minutes before half time constantly, "Toon Toon" and he was replying "Black and white army". Even turned and tried to gee people up, but it had no effect. Too many spectators and not enough supporters in St James' and the women...they look at you as if your a football hooligan or just plain stupid. The march was a peaceful protest and no-one was hurt or offended. Yet the police were very heavy handed and have threatened to take people to court/arrest them. On Saturday I became very disillusioned about what football now is for the following reasons: £40 for a replica shirt that costs like 50p to make (if that) £30 for a ticket - that is like 6 films and upto 18hours, instead you get 90minutes £3 for a pint of Carling out of a shite plastic glass when the pint is awful/watered down as well £2 for a bottle of pop which costs 75p normally £2.20 or something for a pie which would normally cost like 80p The banner that people made and it took about 18hours to make getting STOLEN by Police Lads being dragged to the side by their neck and told they were "little cunts like the rest of them" not to mention the fact that the police also threatened that the same people could get imprisoned, fined and/or banned from the ground for our protest - no-one was offended or hurt and nothing was damaged so how wasn't this a peaceful protest? A few lads threw bottles on the pitch at Ronaldo, yet the Police were nowhere to be seen, for some reason that act sounds more harmful to people than singing "united we're standing, we'll never be seated" and carrying a banner. On the pitch, Newcastle were shite, as per usual at the moment, yet they get paid more money in a week than what the majority of fans make in a year. The cheating, diving and mouthing off of the Man United players even though they were twatting us seemed unnecessary, and the ref booked our players for tackles they got away with easily. In the stands everyone sat on their backsides with faces like a smacked arse, don't get me wrong the performance was hardly worth crediting, but which Newcastle fan went to the ground expecting to win or be entertained by our performance on Saturday? If there is one then they can now be stereotyped as the most optimistic people on the planet. I have nothing wrong with women at football, I totally agree that everyone is equal yada yada yada, but how come they can stand up and shout (even though it is extremely rare), and get away with it, then if a bloke does they get told to sit down by the stewards. Not to mention the fact the women like mentioned before stare at you like your just a little shit/or an idiot because you shout and support your team. Just to round my rant off, where were you on Saturday mate? Did you try your hardest to make an atmosphere? If you did then fair enough, but if not stop making stupid sarcy comments about the lads who do go to the games to do everything they can to support their team. Rant over.

Unofficially alot of people are still doing it. But it is nithing to do with the Toon Ultras as a group. Also, kids have managed for decades to stand up and see the game, I'm sure they could manage even better in a safe standing section.

The Police advised the Toon Ultras not to go ahead with this as they do not have the 'man power' to be able to cover such a 'march' tomorrow. Therefore it is 'officially' off. However, there appears to be a number of lads off both Newcastle and Manchester United forums who WILL be 'marching' including myself. A 22foot x 3.5foot banner saying UNITED WE STAND has also been painted, and the Stretford End Lot have also had theirs made.

They can't help that they are successful. They felt pain when the Munich disaster happened. Alot of their away support is 'proper' support not prawn sarnie eating tourists and businessmen. Manchester City hate Manchester United more than us, yet they could put football rivalry aside for 10minutes, so why can't we when it is something we all want? Away games are all about going for a fun drink, song and dance. Standing up is part of matchday tradition, and more of the 'working class' attend away games, as well as young'uns. If you go to an away game and don't want to stand just don't go, only morons sit at away games. So you are speaking for all AWAY fans are you ? If I wish to sit I'm a moron. A bit fascist that mate. Read what I wrote. Standing is great in standing areas. Sit in seated areas. Get yourself a campaign going for standing areas not for standing in seated areas - you may be more successful. ManU was a completely different club 50 years ago, now they are a successful world corporate brand supported by people who like to be assciated with successful things but have no real allegiance. But they do have SOME real fans I concede. Their away support is probably one of the best in the country. Our campaign is for safe standing sections, not standing in seated areas. What's the point in going to an away game to sit? You might as well remain on the coach/train/plane or in the comfort of your armchair. If you had dodgy knees from playing football you may have a different opinion. I find your assertion that more of the "working class" attend away games a bit strange. Are there statistics to show that a particular socio-economic group is more likely to attend away games than home ones ? More dedicated fans probably, drunk more and louder certainly, but the costs involved in travelling and in some cases the price of tickets may actually mean the true "working class" fan doesn't get to travel as much as he or she would like.
