There have varying predictions of how well the Makems are going to do this year after an 8 year gap from the PL. Thought it might be interesting to keep track of their points total over the season and compare it to their best ever PL season, 7th place with 58 points, 1.53 points per game (PPG) in 1999-00, their average PL season (1.02 PPG) of the 16 completed seasons they have competed in, their worse ever season (0.39 PPG, 2005-06) and the average points total for teams relegated in 18th place (0.92 PPG, ave over 33 seasons). The chart doesn’t take account of relative difficulty of teams played per month or whether home or away. It just uses average PPG for each of the above and the number of games per month this season. Thus far, unsurprisingly as historically they only average 10 wins (range 3-16) after two wins from 3, they are on track for their best ever season.

When was the last time we added 6 first team players/potential starters? (Ramsdale, Thiaw, Ramsey, Elanga, Woldemade, Wissa). We’ve also recently added development players Park and Fitzgerald. Admittedly we have lost a striker (now ‘Voldemorted’) we didn’t want to but we have also moved Longstaff, Targett, Osula, Dubravka, Sedibeh (u21), and Kuol for money; Targett and Vlachodimos (loans); and released Wilson and Hayden. So the six in and five out around the first 11, we’ve got improvements in four positions, one which remains to be seen, and an extra body. 8/10 seems about right. (Would have preferred it without the angst and the betrayal though!).
