Show him the club can compete by acting in the transfer market, give him a better contract and provide an exit clause and this can be sorted sensibly.

Taking a risk in terms on injury recovery at CB is quite shrewd given Burn and Schar have came off good seasons, Botman should be ready and Lascelles available for emergency cover. If this guy comes in and has perfect fitness it’s a steal, and if he’s a crock, well another CB is already needed next summer anyway and that purchases becomes a starter. If he’d joined Newcastle and then Madrid had came in the transfer probably would have happened, but he’d surely have accepted a higher and more limited clause from NUFC as he’d have been playing at a higher level. The offer is now CL football, even the most ambitious players will recognise this is a club you can do well at. Grealish, like Sancho, would be good at the right price, but due to their current salaries there’s zero chance they come for the right price. At £10m and 80k pw in wages it would be a good deal. But as they’re both on 300k pw they’d never go for it, their accountants would break their legs on the way to the medical.

Vlach is likely unsellable as he’ll have been paid over the odds to do the deal last year. And selling him for peanuts triggers a PSR loss on the books. Best can hope for there is a loan with a bit of fee income
