KaKa
The fact he turned us down previously, at least tells me that unlike Pardew, he is not some desperate harlot that will do anything just to get the gig, and take whatever is thrown at him. In that sense it's somewhat positive. I would hope that him agreeing to join this time meant that he was able to weild some influence, and do so on his terms somewhat. KaKa
Transfers-in is still barely a barometer, just like a year ago. The squad is small, w*** and investment is the only option. The ultimate proof is in match results. Well if they bring in more than the absolute minimum, and they sign players of quality that we actually need, then it will be a very good sign. Blueview
Odd really.. It doesn´t rhyme with the "Ashley business as usual" modus operandi does it? Got a feeling that someone else is calling the shots, is Linda Ashley back with Mike for real I ask myself. She was good at bossing him around the tabloids hinted at. Figures 1-0 Football
On a side note he has such a jolly face, similar to Papiss' smile - you just cant help like it. We might be fucking dogshit, but we've got some cracking grins in our squad.
NG32
Heard it all before. Our board man. McCLaren Moncur Charnley Carr Here we go lads. Exciting times.

Then all this will be meaningless, which is definitely still a possibility. But I feel it's going to be good. Don't ask me why. Maybe I am just sick of the Eeyore graphic, and I'm looking for a reason to update it.

Basically i think it won't be as bad as Pardew because i won't hate the man, but it's not exactly going to be great either.
Interpolic
Is there any other club acting like this? Man Utd under Alex Ferguson comes to mind.. Odd really.. Yorkie
Separately from his managerial ability - McClaren is fairly likeable at this point. But I'll be sick of him the moment he hints at toeing the line like his predecessor did.

Even if he's the second worst person in the world he's going to be ten times less despicable than the last permanent manager. Such progress.
Nobody
Today we appointed a man that talked about this club beign grand and deserving of success. He talked about his ambition to do his best to achieve this. The club have come out and followed suit with this idea. We are yonks away from thi point last season already! Pardew had everyone convinced we ought to be grateful to be in the league. Our players weren't good enough. Europe was a pain. The cups were a hinderance. Man, f*** him and his crew. And I am glad he has duly f***ed off to spout his inordinate s*** somewhere else. For now I am glad, because I cannot forget just how angry I was when Pardew and his band of buffoons were here. Let's see what happens. We had better start getting in players quick time. Spot on, nothing irked me more than the 'we cant compete with that club' attitude of pardew. We start with 11 players they start with 11 players, we have the same chance any other club has Of course that's what McClaren and the club was going to say man They weren't going to appoint someone and they both just went "meh, we'll see what happens "

It wasn't just that he toed the line, i just found Pardew insufferable in general i don't get the feeling i will find McClaren a vile human being who i actively hate like i did Pardew. Tbh, now I think about it - there's every chance he's already toe-ing the line. Bleh. I feel better than I did six months ago but it'll take some serious results to shake off my cynicism. Nobody
The investment we'd need for top 8 and a cup win is absolutely massive, and while I do think we might improve our spending a bit, there's no way we'll do anywhere near enough.
SimplyAnth
I just want us to play better football. That's the big thing for me.
relámpago blanco
I like the bloke and rate him higher than say Moyes for example, but his appointment does nothing to solve the fundamental problems at the club. Sure performances will improve and so will results, but only marginally. McClaren is a likeable face of NUFC and that is it which is what I think Ashley wants more than most. He will ensure survival, probably mid-table finishes and the odd cup run, but that's about it. Basically a black and white version of Boro under McClaren minus Euro success and a trophy because we don't do them. I'm not supporting this NUFC because its still not my NUFC. Its Ashley out all the way for me, regardless of who he appoints, signs and how well we do. The last 8 years have been awful, like being constantly ill or in a fucked up relationship. There is nothing he can do to wipe that particular slate clean. I feel the same but how would you feel if we spent a hundred million on players. I dont know how I would feel

I don't really agree with that. But that's not me claiming that the squad is very good as it stands, it's more just my opinion on the Premier League in general. I don't think you need to spend bazillions to accumulate a group of players that can challenge the European places. For the top 4? Yes, absolutely. But the top 8? Not necessarily. To stake a claim, the club needs what it's always needed. Ambition, engineered through sensible investment and good players. I'm not remotely confident that it'll happen, I'm just saying that finishing in the top 8 doesn't necessarily have to cost the Earth.
Mole_Toonfan
Unless there's significant improvement across the league, it wouldn't take an awful lot as outside the top 4 it's all pretty dross shit tbh. But we'll never invest anything like considered normal anyway so the point is moot.
