I'll sell Toon for £420m

MIKE ASHLEY is willing to sell Newcastle for £420million.

The Toon supremo named his price last month when a New York finance company made an approach to buy the club.

Ashley told private equity investors InterMedia Partners — based in the swanky Chrysler Building — he wanted £420m to seal the deal.

The Americans’ interest was so serious, owner Ashley permitted them to see all of Newcastle’s financial documents, accounts and records.

And both sides were forced to sign gagging orders, banning them from ever disclosing details of the talks.

An insider confirmed: “The Americans specialise in investing in sport and wanted to break into the soccer market in Europe.

They thought Newcastle would be the ideal starting place for them.”

Speculation has been rife in City markets for the past six months that mega-bucks Ashley has been on the lookout for a buyer — if the price was right.

The Yanks were hoping Ashley would sell at around £320m — and were shocked when the Toon owner wanted £100m more.

Our insider added: “As soon as Ashley asked for £420m the deal was dead.

“The Americans were interested but didn’t think they could justify that level of investment.”

Billionaire Ashley bought Newcastle from Freddy Shepherd last year for £137m and took on around £80m of debts.

But the fact he has now put a price on the club will only create more uncertainty for boss Kevin Keegan.

He is still rebuilding his relationship with Ashley after an outburst at the end of last term resulted in the manager being hauled down to London for showdown talks.

Is Shaun Custis a Mackem? Seriously?

I saw his brother on SSN the other day - hardly a trace of a Geordie accent and of course a diehard "UNITED" fan (goes without saying it's not our flavour of UNITED).

Whatever it is they are trying some serious boat rocking. Both stories coming from there.

I can only guess that Cu*tis is miffed because Allardyce is his absolute best friend and he's lost a source.

What next? Keegan going because no transfers happening? Owen leaving cos his transfer not being sorted yet? Yawn fucking yawn.

I wonder what the press will make of this. Will the press try and rock the boat at Arsenal, about transfer’s and no cash to spend.

Wenger's financial frustration

Jul 6 2008

Arsene Wenger has admitted Arsenal will probably have to sell their star players every year for nearly another two decades.

The Arsenal boss is currently trying to persuade Emmanuel Adebayor - who is demanding a huge wage increase to stay - and Alexander Hleb not to follow Mathieu Flamini out of the club, but Wenger has revealed the ongoing cost of the move to the Emirates Stadium two years ago means, financially, his hands are tied.

"The strategy of the club is to sell every year and to buy less expensive players," he told the News of the World.

"We manage at Arsenal to maintain all our football ambitions - national and European - while having to free up, for 17 more years, an annual surplus of £24million to pay for our stadium.

"The club's strategy is to favour the policy of youngsters ahead of stars and to count on the collective quality of our game."

Wenger is frustrated by the financial power players have over clubs.

"If I had the power to change anything basic in football, it would be the transfer system which makes mercenaries of players," he continued

"If they are bad ones, they stay and, if they are good, they think only of leaving.

A wealthy construction company run by the family of terrorist Osama bin Laden has emerged as a front-runner to buy Newcastle United. (Mail on Sunday)

So, we could be owned/run by Terrorists soon....AND still have Joey Barton on the books??!!!! :cheesy:

Seriously, where is this coming from?

Who has such a strong agenda against us that they would be trying to unsettle us to such an extent?

I don't think the Allardyce'/Custis' off this world have anywhere near the power.

This is coming from a far higher source than those two bellends.

Just who the fuck has Mike Ashley upset so much to warrant this shit storm every fucking weekend?

All things point to Shepherd but surely he's not well connected enough nowadays? I mean what could he offer journalists, ney news organisations, to get them on side? He's lost his powerbase, he's yesterdays news and frankly he's not clever enough to play big boy politics.

Shepherd would be the only person fucked off enough about the purchase and the way he was bullied into it, coupled with the his families less than welcome reaction on their SJP return to maintain a negative agenda over the long term, surely?

But surely it's from a source higher than that?

Who would benefit from such upset at SJP? A potential buyer maybe? Trying to knock some value off the club by damaging it's reputation/worth?

maybe they do it cos they get the biggest bites off NUFC fans as for all we slag them off as liars etc deep down many believe and fall for every word.

Do you think that many people fall for this shit?

Of those fans that actually contribute financially i.e: those buying season tickets and replica kit every season year in, year out how many (as a percentage) do you actually think believe this shite to the point where it impacts their spending habits etc?

I was thinking this whilst reading the Mail on Sunday article this morning. My first reaction was 'complete load of bollocks - who is driving this shit?' but I did wonder how many supporters would actually believe it and also what difference would it make?

Not having a go btw, just interested in how many people you think this will impact and in what way.

go into any pub on match day and you'll find more believe that sort of thing than is healthy but i can't see why it should affect their spending habits.

Unfortunately people are becoming more and more gullible, you just have to look at the popularity of Big Brother etc to realise that.

For example, Rupert Murdoch says he can sway the public to vote the way he wants, and so far he has been proved correct. Who he backs wins elections. (Not saying that's the only reason of course).

The drip drip of anti NUFC anti Ashley anti keegan drivel seems to work. Non NUFC fans I know think Keegan's shite, think Ashley's definitely selling the club and think we're all deluded.

I suspect there's something behind it (like destabilising the club and hence devaluing it) although it could be just the silly season too.

I still wonder if Murdoch is behind it though, didn't he try to buy Man U a while ago? Shite stories in the Sun last week, News of the World today, look out for an anti Ashley article in the Times tomorrow and my theory gets legs.

Lots of people fall for it, particularly those whose knowledge of the club comes purely from glancing at the BBC gossip page. Like it or not, it creates problems for NUFC.

that is total bollocks

arsenal have a cash pile of 100 million if they needed to buy players

anycase their move to the emirates has created 35 million more each season in revenue, so they afford that 24 million already

arsenal r in a more sound financial position than man utd and liverpool, as their debt is to their stadium while man utd's and liverpool r to their owners

Featured in virginmedia's top 10 most hated clubs. Oddly enough Spurs are absent.

"Massive club" and "loyal fans" - the "Geordie Nation" has won nothing since Elvis was a teenager, and most of their fans were mysteriously absent from the paltry 11,000 that used to turn out in Division 2 in 1991. See also: Bowyer/Dyer/Bellamy/Bramble/Shearer all in one team, and fat fans with no shirts who weep on cue for the TV.

From the BBC. Can you imagine the shit in the papers if this was Ashley?

Thaksin goes on trial in Thailand

Mr Thaksin was ousted in a military coup in 2006

The corruption trial of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has begun in Bangkok, almost two years after he was overthrown in a coup.

Mr Thaksin and his wife face charges related to a Bangkok real estate deal.

The couple deny any wrongdoing, saying the charges of abuse of power against them are politically motivated.

Meanwhile, a top member of the main party in the ruling coalition was found guilty of electoral fraud. The ruling could lead to the party's dissolution.

The Supreme Court banned former House Speaker Yongyut Tiyapairat, of the People Power Party (PPP), from politics for five years after finding he was guilty of vote-buying in 2007.

Thaksin Shinawatra on his return to Thailand

The ruling will put more pressure on the PPP-led six-party governing coalition, already weakened by accusations that it is too close to Mr Thaksin.

Under Thai election law, the ruling against Mr Yongyut opens the way for the Election Commission to investigate whether the whole party was guilty of electoral fraud. It could then be disbanded.

Mr Thaksin, a telecoms billionaire who owns the English football club Manchester City, returned to Thailand in February after 18 months abroad.

Corruption claims

The military ousted him in September 2006, accusing him of corruption and abuse of power.

Mr Thaksin has since been living mostly in the UK, but his political allies won democratic elections late last year, facilitating his return to Thailand.

He, his family and his aides face a number of different allegations. Millions of dollars of his assets have remained frozen since charges were laid.

The case now before the Supreme Court relates to the purchase of a plot of land in the Thai capital.

The former prime minister is accused of using his political influence to help his wife buy the land from a state agency at a favourable price.

'Surprising tenacity'

The couple, who could face lengthy prison terms if convicted, did not attend court, but their lawyer sounded a positive note.

"We are confident that our evidence will be enough to prove in the court that Thaksin and his wife are not guilty," Anek Khamchum told the AFP news agency.

But the courts have shown surprising tenacity in pursuing this first case, says the BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok.

The government has tried to weaken the case by arguing that the military-backed bodies which investigated Mr Thaksin had no legitimacy.

The courts have ignored that, and have even intervened to reverse other government decisions.

Many observers in Thailand are calling this a judicial revolution - where the courts are quietly being asked by the traditional elite to act as checks on the power of elected governments.

Mr Thaksin's own prospects dimmed significantly when three of his lawyers were jailed last month by the Supreme Court for offering a cash bribe in a cake box, our correspondent adds.

At the very least, Mr Thaksin's chances of making a political comeback are looking slim, our correspondent says.
