ahh well, obviously my feelings on this depend on how fit he's gonna stay, still, it is nice to get another player that spurs wanted, just to piss them off, haha, expect even MORE press backlash now from all the spurs journo's

To be fair we are obviously paying him twice as much as they were willing to. Why else would he come here?

More charasmatic manager?, billionaire owner?, plus he's a north east lad who doesn't think London is some kind of wonderland..  I'd say those are all possible reasons as well.

Maybe he also thinks that, shock horror, Spurs aren't as amazing as the London hacks would have us believe?  They've done well over the last few years, but have shown that the clubs obvious limitations makes it almost impossible to kick on and move into the top four.  What must Woodgate have thought when they offered him as much as they could and it didn't even match his Boro wages?

Newcastle poised to sign Woodgate

Woodgate has played 16 times for Middlesbrough this season

Jonathan Woodgate is in talks with Newcastle after their £7m bid for the defender was accepted by Middlesbrough, reports BBC Radio Newcastle.

Woodgate, who left the Magpies to join Real Madrid in 2004, looks set for a return to the club having reportedly turned down a move to Tottenham.

Spurs had also had an offer for the England international accepted.

Woodgate, 28, was not included in Middlesbrough's squad for their FA Cup match at Mansfield on Saturday.

You views on Woodgate's future

On Thursday, Boro manager Gareth Southgate insisted he was under no pressure to sell any of his players.

"We wouldn't let anybody go unless we thought we were suitably covered in that position or had somebody else coming in who we thought could replace the player that was going," he said.

Southgate has other options in defence, with David Wheater, Robert Huth, Emanuel Pogatetz and Matthew Bates all competing for places.

Woodgate joined hometown team Boro for £7m from Real last summer, after an impressive campaign on loan from the Spanish club last season.

Woodgate is the best CB I've seen playing for the Toon in 40 years - and that includes Moncur, Burton etc.

The only drawback is his fitness - if he stays fit he is a real asset, if not he is not worth a big fee.

There are some question marks over his lifestyle, but a great defender when fit ; no doubt about it.

"Am I the only one who sees what's really going on with this Woodgate deal?

It's been set-up perfectly so that Newcastle "swooop" and Kevin Keegan grabs all the headlines.  Again.

All this bullshit leaked to any news agency that will listen; con them into thinking he's going to Tottenham - then, at the last minute, Whoooosh!  Here come Newcastle! -> "KEEGAN SWOOPS FOR WOODY" (etc, etc...) Roll  Cue SSN then hotfooting it up to St James' Park to interview the unemployed outside the stadium.

Until that ridiculous club stop trying to grab the headlines all the time - they will never learn the error of their ways."

Spus must be kicking themselves, if it's true they bid £8m and we got him for £7m.

no doubt some ITK will claim we are paying 7m cash upfront and they were offering £3.50p upfront and the rest based on how many times he breaths in the next 10 years

Both ridiculous and shortsighted comments.

Spurs have a rigid wage structure - we all know that.

If Spurs are paying 8M transfer fee, and we are paying 7M transfer fee, yet Spurs are paying 50k per week wage, and we match Woodgate's current pay 70k per week - within a year our expenditure on Woodgate would have matched Spurs, and after a year we would start paying 20k more per week than Spurs.

What is there to laugh at Spurs if we are getting Woodgate on the basis of paying more money?
