Alan Shearer tells Obafemi Martins to show commitment to Newcastle

 

Alan Shearer has challenged Obafemi Martins to demonstrate his commitment to Newcastle United in the most tangible manner and play through gritted teeth for the rest of the season. The Nigeria striker provoked consternation last weekend when he reported a groin problem on the morning of the club’s Barclays Premier League match away to Stoke City and while that matter has been resolved, others have still to be addressed.

 

Since Shearer’s appointment as manager, greater discipline and punctuality have been insisted upon. In an attempt to tackle Newcastle’s dreadful record with injuries and fitness, he has insisted that players receiving treatment must stay at the training ground late into the afternoon. The messages may be basic, but they are having an effect.

 

“I’ve enjoyed the challenge of dealing with different characters,” Shearer said. “You’ve got 22 players who are all different. The manager’s job is to get the best out of them. What you say to players and what you don’t say to them is very important. Some need a kick up the backside or pushed harder than others. I don’t know whether its fate or the 4 o’clock thing but a lot of those injuries are clearing up.”

 

A scan on Martins’s groin has revealed that “there is something not right in there,” Shearer said, and although the forward is rated increasingly unlikely to be fit for Sunday’s match away to Tottenham Hotspur, the club are hoping that he will make himself available for the five games that follow. However, Mark Viduka is back in the squad after an Achilles injury, helping to make up for Martins’s likely absence.

 

“We have a few different scenarios with Oba,” Shearer said. “One, an operation; two, an injection; three, rest; and four, play through the play barrier. We know what we want him to do, it is just a case of how much pain that will cause him.”

He has the whole summer to rest, not as if it's the World Cup or Nigeria haven't got a lot of strikers to choose from. He should take some pain killing injections and take to the field. If he needs an op, then have one straight after the last game of the season (unless he can't walk obviously!)

Obafemi Martins urged to put body on line

ALAN Shearer has challenged Obafemi Martins to prove his commitment to Newcastle United’s safety mission by playing with the groin injury which prompted him to withdraw from the match against Stoke City last weekend.

 

Although Shearer insisted his grievance with Martins has been forgotten following clear-the-air talks at the training ground this week, he would still like to see the Nigerian putting his body on the line for the club he professes to love.

 

United’s new manager has never doubted Martins’ claim of a groin problem and a scan this week confirmed there is some damage.

 

However, there is also a clear indication from Shearer that he does not believe it is serious enough to rule him out for any length of time.

 

Martins has not trained all week and is a major doubt for the trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, but Shearer has urged him to play through the pain in order to help keep Newcastle in the top flight.

 

“We have a few different scenarios,” said Shearer when asked what the player’s scan results had shown. “One is an operation, two an injection, three rest, four play through the play barrier.

 

“We know, obviously, what we want him to do, it is just a case of how much pain that will cause him.

 

“It is a matter of wait and see how he is tomorrow.

 

“An operation would rule him out for the season. Rest, we’d lose him for two or three weeks, the same for an injection.

 

“The favoured option is to try and get him to play through the pain barrier and see where we get at the end of the season.

 

“The scan has shown there is something not right in there. “Having had hernias myself, sometimes you can play through it and not do any more damage.

 

“We need everybody available to us. For him to play is our preferred option

 

“Let’s wait and see how this week goes, see whether he is in a lot of discomfort or not. We will make it clear to him what we’d like him to do because we are not in the position to lose anyone and he brings something different to the side with his pace.”

 

Although Shearer would almost certainly have played on with the problem, and is obviously frustrated about the situation, he also knows he cannot afford to fall out with any of his players at such a crucial stage of the season.

 

Newcastle will travel to Tottenham at the weekend knowing that fourth-from-bottom Sunderland could be five points clear by the time they kick off as their local rivals play Hull City on Saturday and that Middlesbrough, who entertain Fulham on the same day, might be two points above them.

 

With that in mind, Martins will be given plenty of support and encouragement over the next few days rather than a kick up the backside.

 

Shearer added: “He knew I was disappointed with the timing of things (last weekend), but as an on going problem, no.

 

“I spoke to him again at the start of the week. It’s all forgotten about. There are no problems.

 

“We can’t afford to have any problems like that. We have to keep everyone on side and see where we get.

 

“We have not ruled him out of the Tottenham game. It is looking increasingly unlikely he will be available for Sunday, but we are not giving up hope on him yet.”

 

And there was some much better news for Shearer on the injury front as Mark Viduka, who has started just one game this season, will be fit enough to travel to London.

 

The Australian international has struggled with an Achilles problem for over a year now, but his manager still feels he can have a role to play in the next six games.

 

He said: “Mark has trained well. Obviously he’s got a huge amount of talent and we believe, if we can keep him fit, he will play a big part and help us stay up.”

 

:: TOTTENHAM midfielder Jermaine Jenas is a major doubt to face his former club Newcastle on Sunday after suffering a hamstring injury last week.

 

Jenas picked up the problem in the Premier League win over West Ham, although Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has Honduran holding midfielder Wilson Palacios back from suspension to face the Magpies side.

I think Shearer has been quite clever in his dealings of this situation. He has sent out a strong message that he will not tolerate any crap whatsoever  be it lateness or suspect injuries but unlike a certain former manager of ours, he'll not then cut off his nose to spite his face by ostracising those miscreants.

 

However I think Martins and any other player who pulls stunts regardless of content, will find the exit once this season is over very quickly and I for one can't wait for that day because for too long players have taken the piss on a regular basis at Gallowgate.

 

You get the impression that in Roeder and lately Kinnear we had two managers who were soft touches whereas Big Sam didn't quite have the authority with fans (nor the time) to sweep his brush firmly. KK would have eventually swept away all the wasters and dross as he tried to do with Ameobi and now it is Al's turn.

 

Providing he stays on I can see a massive clear-out coming up whether we stay up or not, which of course is what we need.

Yes, fundamentally, I feel he would - because they'd be set up to deal with him. That was the thing with Spurs - the particular way in which we started to play better was a result of their seeking to deal with him. Suddenly, they had to drop their defensive line back 10 or 15 yards to accommodate the risk of his pace - which in turn gave us far more space in midfield. This allowed, for example, Gutierrez to have a positive impact in the attacking sphere - he hadn't been much use up until then - one of his weaknesses is he's not very effective when smothered.

 

So yes, having Martins on the pitch is very good for us, not so much for the direct impact he can offer (which is still relatively helpful), but because the rest of the team indirectly benefits greatly.

OBAFEMI Martins has thanked gaffer Alan Shearer for having the "guts" to come in and save Newcastle United.

 

The Toon legend returned to the St.James' Park earlier this month charged with the task of keeping the Magpies in the Barclays Premier League.

 

And Nigerian hitman Martins, speaking exclusively to nufcTV, says that few would've had the courage to accept the club's survival supplication.

 

"Alan Shearer has come to try to help the team and I think he did right because a lot of managers wouldn't have," said the player who inherited Shearer's famous No.9 jersey nearly three years ago.

 

"You know, he had the guts to come and he's a legend of Newcastle United.

 

"I really like him as a manager and I really respected him as a player as well.

 

"I'm very happy that he's here but we, as players, have to help him out and try to win some games for him so we can stay up."
