Newcastle United hasn’t made any new contact with Deportivo, while Lendoiro still firm in his position. However, the club already started to search for a replacement. Actually, coach Lotina used the long trip to Venezuela in order to watch videos of possible replacements. No novelties in the case of Fabricio Coloccini. His agent, Marcelo Lombilla, announced he was leaving Spain, but some reports in the radio appoint that he hasn’t left yet the country. At the same time nobody from Newcastle United has contacted the Galician club in order to soften the positions. President Lendoiro was asking for a meeting with the officials from the Premiership club, but there wasn’t any answer, apparently they prefer to negotiate through Lombilla. Meanwhile, no advance is expected to occur within the next days, mainly because president Lendoiro could travel in the next hours in order to join the squad in its tour through Venezuela. The president delayed his trip in order to stay alert about any novelty related to Coloccini’s case, but he might suspend the trip in case of any communication from England. At the same time, Newcastle’s squad is traveling in order to play a friendly match in Mallorca. The media in La Coruña is convinced the deal is near to occur, especially since the main obstacle seems to be the method of payment offered by ‘the Toons’. In case Newcastle’s €12 million proposition is accepted, it will be the fifth biggest selling operation in Deportivo’s history. Just behind the ones of Rivaldo (€24 million), Flavio Conceiçao (€24 million), Roy Makaay (€19 million) and Albert Luque (€14 million). This last one also made with Newcastle United. Actually on Friday it was informed by Argentinean sportpaper Olé that Panathinaikos is offering €4 million for the 50% of his rights, the other half of the player’s rights belongs to a private corporation. Meanwhile, other sources are mentioning different names. For example Marca is appointing to Efstathios Tavlaridis (28) as the main option for Lotina. The Greek played before at Arsenal, Portsmouth and Lille OSC, he signed a three-year contract with Saint-Etienne during the past season. Other source, Deporte Campeón (DxT), mentioned the name of Marko Basa (25) from Le Mans. He is half-Montenegrin from his father's side, while he’s mother is a Serb from Trstenik. He has played with Le Mans since the year 2005 and already completed 88 matches in Ligue 1. Other option mentioned by DxT is Sébastien Puygrenier (28), but the French was recently signed by FC Zenit. Other name is coming from Argentina. Radio La Red informed that Deportivo has been asking for Diego Daniel Colotto, Argentinean central defender that has been playing for Atlas de Guadalajara since 2007. Colotto won the U-20 FIFA World Cup with Argentina in 2001. He possesses an Italian passport and according to some reports in Mexico, his transfer has been valued in $4 million (€2.57 million). Potentially yes, although we could get quite a fair few years out of him due to his age. But then again, a lot of Argentinian players like to go back home and finish their careers there. Argentinian out to force United deal Jul 30 2008 by Luke Edwards, The Journal Fabrico Coloccini FABRICIO Coloccini has threatened to ask for Fifa's help as he looks to complete his move to Newcastle United because Deportivo La Coruña were still refusing to lower their asking price yesterday. But it seems that Metz defender Sébastien Bassong is on the verge of signing a three-year contract with Newcastle following a successful trial. The Magpies had a bid of around £8.25m accepted by Deportivo president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro for Coloccini over the weekend and Newcastle have already agreed personal terms with the Argentinian defender. But the deal is in danger of collapsing after Lendoiro decided to suddenly raise the asking price by two million euros on the day it was set to be finalised. This has infuriated the player’s agent Marcelo Lombilla and the Newcastle hierarchy, who believed they were going to be able to unveil their third signing of the summer before the first-team squad flew out to Spain for the Mallorca Summer Cup this afternoon. With the transfer apparently stuck in deadlock, Lombilla has warned his client will either invoke Fifa Rule 17 – the so-called Webster rule – which enables players aged under 28 to buy their way out of the remainder of their contract after three years of it have elapsed to facilitate a transfer, or he will report Lendoiro to the game’s governing body for the way he has conducted the deal. “I do not want it to do, but I have the right to contact Fifa,” said Lombilla, as Coloccini continued to train alone in Spain after the rest of the Deportivo squad travelled to Veneuezla for a pre-season tour. “I represent football players, not presidents or the clubs. “At the end of the day, Fabricio is in danger of missing out on the contract of his life and we might need to go to Fifa to get the matter resolved. Lendoiro has to face up to the music and it is that he should not have asked for more from anyone.” It is difficult to see how Fifa could force Lendoiro to accept Newcastle’s initial offer as nothing had been signed and sealed when the 26-year-old met with United officials to thrash out the details of his contract. Lendoiro used a similar ploy to force Newcastle to pay an extra £2m when Albert Luque moved to St James’s Park three years ago but, while former chairman Freddie Shepherd reluctantly agreed to the change in terms, the new United board have refused to be bullied. It is another frustrating setback for manager Kevin Keegan, who has still not been able to play another Argentina international Jonas Gutierrez in pre-season because Real Mallorca have refused to release his registration. Gutierrez is believed to have used Fifa Rule 17 – first tested when Scotland international defender Andy Webster forced his way out of Hearts to join Wigan – to sign for Newcastle, but Mallorca still believe they are entitled to a transfer fee. Newcastle play Mallorca in a friendly on Sunday and Keegan is hoping the disputes with both Spanish clubs will have been resolved by then – although he will be happy to hear that the Magpies have reached an agreement for Bassong. One player who will not be involved in United’s trip to Majorca is Joey Barton, despite official confirmation he will remain at the club despite pleading guilty to two separate assault charges in the last three months. Barton met with United officials yesterday morning, but Newcastle – and his agent, Willie McKay – have refused to reveal any details of what was discussed or whether the player has had to accept a pay cut to stay on Tyneside. A club statement yesterday merely confirmed Barton’s continued employment. And Keegan can expect to be grilled further on the subject when he is obliged to hold a pre-match Press conference before Newcastle’s match against Hertha Berlin on Friday night. “Newcastle United officials can confirm they have met with Joey Barton today, following which it has been agreed by everyone involved that Joey will remain with the club,” said the statement. “The club will not be making any further comment at this time.” Meanwhile, Morocco international left-back Badr El-Kaddouri has claimed Aston Villa and Newcastle both want to sign him from Dynamo Kiev.
