Shearer not staying isn't the end of the world, we can pull in a good manager compared to the standards of the Championship, dare i say it a better one than Shearer is currently at. Think off the field he's exactly what we need, on it, think on it he's another Glenn Roeder, ie, hasn't got a clue.

 

He's going to need the best players, the best facilities and the best staff in the Championship to get the club promoted, i think there are managers out there that we can get who wouldn't need everything spot on to get us out of it.

ALAN SHEARER was scheduled to meet with managing director Derek Llambias today to resume talks over his future at St James’s Park.

 

The Chronicle understands that Shearer is determined to land the manager’s post after a week of negotiations didn’t come up with a happy ending.

 

Now United are waiting to see if a rebuilding programme is possible, and have been approached by Barclays Bank, who have provided them with a £40 million working capital facility.

 

Shearer and Llambias last met on Thursday last week - but the legendary No 9 will understandably be keen to clear up the situation in light of Mike Ashley’s decision to put the “for sale” signs at St James’s Park up for the second time in 10 months.

 

Ashley and Llambias also failed to attend Newcastle’s Fairs Cup 40th anniversary dinner at St James’s, but Shearer was in attendance, with United’s all-time top scorer given a tremendous ovation by the 700-strong audience.

 

Ashley – who is looking to pick up £100m for the club – has drafted investment bank chairman Keith Harris back in, and is hoping the chief of Seymour Pierce can do enough to find a buyer for the beleaguered and relegated Magpies.

 

Shearer and his assistant Iain Dowie have told Ashley in no uncertain terms just what is needed if United are to even stand a chance of mounting a promotion challenge next season.

 

And the meetings with both Shearer, Ashley and Llambias last week involved talk about transfer budgets, salaries and a bonus, should the black-and-whites make an instant return to the top flight.

 

Llambias was getting back to work today and told the Chronicle: “Talks are still ongoing. We hope to have something resolved by the end of the week.”

 

Ashley had said yesterday: “It has been catastrophic for everybody.

 

“I’ve lost my money and made terrible decisions.

 

“Now I want to sell as soon as I can.

 

“Of course I regret it. I never said I was an expert in football clubs.

 

“I was just a fan – although a very wealthy fan. But I’m not so wealthy now.

 

“I put my money into it and I tried my best, but I accept my best was woefully short. I am genuinely sorry for everybody about what has happened.”

 

Fans are praying that Shearer is given the chance to rebuild the squad, regardless of who owns the club in the long-term.

 

Yet even though the Toon board were keen to unveil Shearer last week, with positive noises coming out of St James’s, the grim reality of a financial meltdown caused by relegation has had drastic implications for everybody at United.

 

A cull of around 120 staff has been in operation since demotion to the Championship, with operations director David Williamson and experienced head of communications Gary Oliver a couple of the more high-profile casulaties. And this only seems to have slowed down the progress of appointing Shearer.

 

However, with United’s new Championship counterparts now having a one-month advantage on the Magpies, transfer targets for Shearer are now looking vulnerable, leaving the Toon with less and less choice by the day.

 

It is also understood that Ashley would be prepared to bring back Joe Kinnear, now fit again after heart surgery, should he be unable to thrash out terms with Big Al.

 

That could spark fury on Tyneside, with the majority of United fans believing that Shearer is the only man to sort out the mess at St James’s at the moment due to his unconditional love for the club.

 

And it may run the risk of fans choosing not to renew season tickets.

Nicky Butt calls for NUFC to confirm Shearer's job

NICKY BUTT has called for Newcastle United to make their move and hand Alan Shearer the manager's job at St James's Park.

 

Toon tycoon Mike Ashley placed the Magpies back on the market for a second time in 10 months yesterday, yet Butt has followed in the footsteps of fellow senior stars like Damien Duff and Habib Beye to call for Shearer to be installed as boss.

 

Shearer is expected to meet with managing director Derek Llambias today in a bid to thrash out a deal, even though the club is up for sale.

 

And Butt told the Chronicle: “Alan is somebody we all respect.

 

“To have him on board is a big plus for Newcastle United.

 

“The experiences of having Alan and Iain Dowie in training made every player happy.”

 

Butt went through the bitter experience of relegation for the second time in his career eight days ago at Aston Villa, having gone down with Birmingham City in 2006.

 

It is all a far cry from lifting trophy after trophy with Manchester United.

 

However, Butt has revealed he is still proud to be a Newcastle player.

 

He added: “I’ve got plenty of regrets in my career, like I regret I haven’t performed to the highest level all the time, but you can say that about every player that comes to the club.

 

“But I’m happy I signed for Newcastle – I wouldn’t have changed it for the world.

 

“You can’t have regrets like ‘I should have done this, I should have done that’.

 

“I came here to play for a massive club, and I’ve done that.”

 

Now Butt simply wants his former England international colleague Shearer to be installed as boss so the playing staff and backroom team can start looking to the future.

 

He added: “Hopefully, we can move on and rebuild.

 

“That’s what everybody is aiming for.”
