The two main groups interested in the Championship outfit are both said to be keen on having Shearer as boss. But Ashley put the Geordie legend's appointment on ice following relegation. And now Toon face the prospect of returning to pre-season training on Wednesday with no manager. Significant developments are expected inside 72 hours though, with the preferred bidder likely to be revealed. Despite failing to keep Newcastle in the Premier League in his eight-game caretaker spell, Shearer is still the fans' favourite to be full-time boss. But while Shearer is their hero, the Toon Army have sent Michael Owen packing with a stinging blast. Owen cost Newcastle almost £38m in transfer fee and wages - and repaid the club with 26 league goals. He will end four injury-hit years on Tyneside when his contract expires next week. Fans' website NUFC.com said: "No shame, no guts, no soul. You put the con in icon. "At least Joey Barton goes through the motions of badge-kissing. The two consortia leading the race to buy out Ashley are understood to have indicated they want Shearer as manager, news that will have come as a boost for the Tyneside great. However, they are not the only parties to have expressed an interest in the Magpies – and the intentions of the others on the managerial front are as yet unclear. Although the leading contenders have reached an advanced stage in proceedings as they examine the club’s books, no deal has been struck. Shearer has been contacted by managing director Derek Llambias in recent days and the 38-year-old has been brought up to date on events.
