Aston Villa v Newcastle - 24/05/09 - Pre-match thread

Recommended Posts

For some strange reason I have woke up with this feeling that the players will do us proud today. I don't know why, nothing they've done all season has suggested it but there you go. I just think they will.

Interesting.

The M6 southbound is CLOSED at Spaghetti Junction in BOTH directions, for an accident on the south bound carriageway, a bad one apparently.

Two things. Firstly, that's  the turn off for Villa Park. Secondly, it is also Gay Pride parade today in town, so the traffic will be f***ing awful.

I can genuinely see this match kicking off late, which will be to your advantage.

4 dead.

Not at Spaghetti as i thought, but the next junction up.

Still, it means absolute traffic chaos in all approaches to the ground.

It looks as if the accident happened at about 9am, hopefully the accident investigation won't take all day but they can't rush those sort of things.

There was one near us a while back (M40) and the motorway was closed pretty much the entire way.

I guess it is a crime scene, too, if someone was driving the wrong way up the motorway.

Guest Taff

20 miles away from Birmingham, nervous as hell, Jesus.

As I'm so early, can someone recommend a Toon friendly pub I can drink myself to death in?

Go into the city centre, have a few down Hurst Street.

Michael Owen is set to miss out on Newcastle's survival Sunday showdown.

The Newcastle captain is still struggling to shake off a groin strain and manager Alan Shearer has decided not to risk starting his former strike partner at Aston Villa today.

And in another gamble, Shearer has decided to start with Republic of Ireland winger Damien Duff at left-back, even though his only recognised left-back Jose Enrique is fit.

Michael Owen looks likely to miss the Magpies' clash against Aston Villa

But with Owen set to start the game on the bench, it is the decision to leave out the struggling former England striker which will raise eyebrows at Villa Park.

Owen has gone 11 games without a goal, the worst run of his career.

Shearer also dropped him for the defeat at Liverpool earlier in the month.

He has failed to train with the rest of the first team throughout the week and is considered behind Obafemi Martins, who has also been struggling with a groin injury.

The Nigeria striker is expected to partner Mark Viduka upfront.

The decision to keep Duff at left-back makes sense as the former Chelsea midfielder has put in some of his best Newcastle performances in a makeshift back four and Enrique has hardly lived up to his £6million price tag at any time at St James's Park.

Peter Lovenkrands will play in front of Duff, with Danny Guthrie taking the right flank.
