United managing director Derek Llambias was on hand again yesterday as the Malaysian consortium took a second look around the training ground. More dramatic scenes at the club’s Benton HQ saw a helicopter back at the training ground with the group’s second largest investor present on Tyneside. Sources in Malaysia today were refusing to rule out to the Chronicle that billionaire Ananda Krishnan could be the new face of United. And Malaysia’s Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek has hailed the potential move. He said: “We should be proud if it really happens that a Malaysian is involved in such a huge transaction. “It’s not impossible, and I hope it goes through. It can have a big impact on the development of Malaysian football.” Meanwhile the Singapore-based Profitable Group, the first contenders to express their interest in the Magpies, are waiting to hear back from Seymour Pierce to see if their bid has been accepted. A source close to the group confirmed that they had received a fax confirming that the offer, thought to be around £75m, was under “serious consideration”. But Llambias has always insisted that the Profitable Group were not contenders, and told the Chronicle earlier this week there were at least two bids at £100m for the club. Other groups said to be in the running are an American consortium, who toured the training ground and stadium on June 29, and former chairman Freddy Shepherd, who is waiting on developments while in Portugal on a golfing break. We reported last night how a clutch of senior United players have set a fortnight deadline to see if Shearer is appointed as boss before handing in transfer requests. However, judging by a Chronicle online survey, the results of which are published on Page 55, it seems that Toon fans are also waiting to see the outcome of both the sale and a managerial appointment before making a long-term financial commitment to the Magpies. with season ticket sales expected to be the lowest since the 1991/92 season, when United just avoided relegation to the old Third Division.
