I like Krul, and want him to do well, but with such a young keeper you have to expect errors like this. It's unfortunate we are in the position we are, where errors could cost us points. Granted we're not going to stay up on games like this, but you need to hope he learns from this.

The first goal is totally down to Krul like. Should have put his foot through it and cleared his lines. To suggest anything else is just passing the buck.

Still feel he's a better bet than Harper though. Said many times, Krul's going to get better and Harper's definitely not going to improve. Krul needs to keep the shirt unless he starts doing this on a regular basis.

I think blaming Colocini at all is a but harsh.  midds is right in that Krul made a complete hash of it, no matter how you look at it.  Still, I expect young keepers to screw things up in such a way every once in awhile.  Now if he's consistenly David Jamesing it well in to his career, then we will have good reason to be harsh on him.

I just wish he was learning from his mistakes on loan somewhere.

We can't afford this season to moonlight as a learning curve, especially not for a keeper.

quite agree - all he had to do was hoof it - its hardly a technical issue - first rule of goalkeeping 'don't ponce about'

Is Harper really any better though?

Possibly not, but I don't think he's any worse. Or worse than some are suggesting he is.

Krul was lauded after his Arsenal performance. He has made some superb saves this season. He has been more important in games than say Guttierez has.

But it doesn't make Harper worse.

The way it goes on this forum, the better Krul gets, the worse Harper gets.

Making saves is the easy part of goalkeeping, and for the life of me i cannot grasp why folk never seem to acknowledge this.

Harper's judgement is better, he's a better distributor and his handling is better. He's not great, or even that good, but he'll do for this season.

Got no problem with any of that.

But if a goal is conceded through lack of judgement or lack of agility/shot-stopping it doesn't make much difference - it's gone in. Krul's the future and Harper's the past.

I would certainly contend that his distribution and handling, if better, are marginally so at best.  It seems to take such a long time for the instructions from his brain to get to his limbs that he has become such a liability.  I'm not saying Krul is a much better choice, but recall some of Harper's school ground errors over the past two years.

Krul has exceptional agility and has pulled off some great saves this season. Let's not forget the positive side.

On the goal today, it's not a matter of trying to get Krul off the hook, because he did have the option of hoofing the ball into the stands, which wouldn't have got him any applause but would have been the correct one. He'll learn from that.

But Colo's decision was questionable as well. It's the second minute of the game, he's got an inexperienced keeper and he gives him a bouncing ball which he can't hit first time and which gives Silva the chance to put him under pressure. I think an experienced keeper would have hoofed it off and then given Colo a rocket.

And Krul won't 'do for this season'?

That's the thing, though. It's usually a lot easier for opponents to exploit instances of poor judgement, as we saw today. Lack of agility will cost us, but only as a last line of defence. Today we gift-wrapped a goal.

I'm afraid I see it the way midds does. It's still a goal. Don't get how one is a last line of defence and one is it. Either way, the goalkeeper wasn't capable of preventing it, whether it was because of his lack of mental or physical attributes. Just as Harper would save us points through decision making over the season, Krul will save us points with his youthful agility over the season.

If you think Coloccini did anything wrong in expecting Krul to clear that, you're simply watching too much Scottish/Sunday League football.

You've said yourself (maybe in this thread, I'm not going to go looking) that Krul should only be dropped if he starts costing us games.

Today his poor judgement cost us a goal but not the game. It's not worth losing his place over imo. Stick by him and give him the chance to learn from it.

If he's consistently making these costly errors over a few games, then I will be a bit worried.  And I do agree that whether it's horrendous decision making, or no longer having the physical ability, it doesn't matter in the end.  "Well, at least he made the correct decision" doesn't cut it any better.  At this point, what is more important is to consider who is going to to ship in more goals over the course of the season...not how they do it.
