Joey Barton

JOEY BARTON is sticking to his vow of seeing out his contract at Newcastle – despite interest from relegated West Ham United.

The Chronicle understands there is some interest from his old boss Sam Allardyce at Upton Park, but the man who brought the Scouser to St James’ would have to convince his new board to cough up the one-time England star’s top-flight wage packet.

Both Liverpool and Everton have ruled out moves for Barton since news broke of United’s decision not to offer him fresh terms and, while there has been interest from Hamburg and two French clubs, if he became available at a knockdown price, there have been no official bids so far.

Barton was told last month he will not be offered a new deal at St James’, with his agent Willy MacKay then confirming he was prepared to run his current deal down to next June’s expiry date.

Barton was voted United’s player of the season by Chronicle readers last month and, in his first injury-free season for the Magpies, performed to his full potential, with calls for a return to the international set-up from some observers.

However, in January he twice turned down the chance to extend his stay on Tyneside after failing to agree terms on a new contract.

And this has resulted in the withdrawal of any type of offer at the end of the season, leaving Barton in limbo.

Barton is currently on holiday in Las Vegas, but has every intention of being back at the club’s Benton base on July 4 to see out the remaining year on his contract.

A source close to Barton told the Chronicle: “Joey is only interested in one thing – remaining at Newcastle United. That’s one thing that is unlikely to change. He’s aiming to have a season just like the last one, but hopefully help Newcastle achieve an even higher finish and do something in the cups.”

United boss Alan Pardew has already made it crystal clear he intends to hold on to Barton, and will re-iterate this when the Magpies regroup next month.

Pardew will also be keen to sit down with his skipper Kevin Nolan after talks over a new contract broke down – leaving the ex-Bolton man facing an uncertain long-term future.

There is no way Barton will drop down to the Championship - he is far above that level.

If he does decide to leave this Summer, I can imagine it will be late in the transfer window.

Barton will stay for another year, do a great job, and a new contact off will come in, probably the same deal and he'll accept.

Nolan will stay for the next two years and for the last year of this well all be counting down the days until he leaves on a free to a recently promoted club for half the money he's on now.

Though I could see Nolan getting a cob on and us selling him this window.

Normal players would leave if a bid was accepted, but Joey's a bit different isn't he? If theres anybody that will refuse to leave, despite the club, it's Joey Barton. Hopefully.

Barton won't leave because he's not going to get a similar contract at a club like this one...or probably any club for that matter. As long as he continues to give 100% and doesn't rock the boat I'm more than happy with that.

Presumably his thoughts are that we'd be stupid to get rid of him as we are either going to need to rely on unproven foreign players or overpriced British ones. I would agree.
