For someone who 'has no ability whatsoever going forward', Perch's 30-yard shot didn't look all that bad. He set up the Gosling goal at Man City with the initial through pass to Ba too.

He still doesn't have any ability going forward, and that's fine if he does a job at the unglamorous side things. Think in today's football we sometimes want players to be jack of all trades rather than a master of one. As you sometimes need to carry a flair player in your team, you sometimes need to put up with players of limited forward thinking ability too, to create a balance.

That shot from perch was pretty sweet though, would have been fitting reward for his recent form had it just snuck inside the post.

It was 'always going wide'.  Been impressed by him of late though.

Deserves a bit of credit tbh. Thought he did an alright job.

Does not deserve to be dropped.

with tiote and cabaye back, where would you play him ?

In a midfield 3 with Tiote and Cabaye. HBA, Ba and Cisse in front. Jonas has been woeful since Wolves away

i was close to thinking that till fulham, then it came back how poor guthrie is off the ball.

IMO he's earned his place more than any of the other options and has looked quality when having to come in for Tiote or Cabaye. His movement off the ball won't be a problem in that three because of the work rate of the other two which leaves Guthrie to do what he does best, spray the ball around.

Guthrie is great on the ball.  But when he doesn't have the ball we are literally down to 10 men.

a lot thought he was very good in that game, but yes that 2nd half brought it all back about his long-standing weaknesses. i think he's been a lot better on the ball than cabaye recently (and he even did some good things today), which is probably more to do with cabaye shifting to a more defensive role, but he's still the same player who goes missing off the ball with physical and mental limitations.

Neither him or Perch had the legs or quality to get up amongst Podric. In hindsight should have Abeid or Jonas in there too.

in hindsight given the players we had at our disposal we should have just launched the ball like we usually do instead of "letting our hair down" and trying to play football.

Interesting how Spurs had so many players following up their strikers in the box to pick up the loose pieces, yet when we had our few moments there was no one anywhere close to the front man and the crosses went into empty space. Guthrie's a nice player but he gets overwhelmed at the top level. Larger pitches played across wide spaces leave him gasping and left for dead unfortunately.

no, i cant say i blame him too much, given the circumstance, he was nervous about pushing up, you can see it quite clearly, that would leave space, and spurs, today looked like any tiny gap left in midfield, they would exploit it.  and they did.

Considering Spurs put out arguably their best midfield combo who where slick and controlled, our own midfield - majority of whom are back up players - were always going to be given the run-around. This opposition and the form that they were in rendered Perch pretty useless. It aint his fault, this is just way above his station and that would naturally impact Guthrie who was gonna have a tough time anyway.

Put this performance in the bottom draw and forget about it.
