United boss Chris Hughton has been impressed with Simpson and the 22-year-old fits into the club’s transfer strategy which focuses on signing young players for the future – with sell-on value – as well as the present. The right-back would jump at the chance to stay at St James’ Park and admits he has no desire to return to Manchester United to play for their reserve team, but negotiations are still taking place. The Red Devils would like to receive a fee for Simpson of more than £1m during the January transfer window and are keen for Newcastle to make the move a permanent one next month. However, although there is a small amount of money for Hughton to play with in the New Year, it is a fee Newcastle are reluctant to commit at this stage with more than half of their Championship campaign left to play. Although the Magpies are top of the table and will extend their winning run to six consecutive games if they beat Watford at St James’ Park this afternoon, promotion can not be taken for granted and the financial situation remains a delicate one after the disaster of relegation. As a result, the Newcastle hierarchy are trying to reach a compromise which will see them extend Simpson’s temporary deal until the end of the season before paying a fee to the Red Devils if and when they achieve promotion. Simpson’s contract at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season, but Manchester United will be entitled to compensation as he is under the age of 23. Hughton would only confirm that he was pleased with Simpson’s form when asked this week. He said: “We’re very aware of his situation and were aware of it when he came here. There will always be options approaching the window and we have to continually assess those. Danny’s done well for us.” Simpson, though, is the only specialist right-back in his squad and Hughton has privately admitted he wants to keep him in meetings with owner Mike Ashley and managing director Derek Llambias. The situation is rather less clear regarding Marlon Harewood, who is also after an extended stay on Tyneside despite a difficult start to his time at the club. Hughton is yet to be convinced by the striker, although he will give him another chance to prove his worth when he starts against Watford following his two goals against Swansea last weekend. The Journal understands Harewood’s representatives have asked whether the player’s contract will be extended beyond the end of the month, but have been told no decision has been made. Newcastle are again reluctant to sign the player permanently given the lack of funds available, particularly as much of the budget is expected to pay for Sheffield United centre-back Matthew Kilgallon. An extended loan deal is an option, even though United are also trying to avoid paying a loan fee to Aston Villa for Harewood as they feel they are already helping Martin O’Neill by taking the 30-year-old’s wages of £25,000-a-week off the books at Villa Park. Given Newcastle’s pursuit of Kilgallon, it would look as though Zurab Khizanisvili will be heading back to Blackburn Rovers when his loan contract expires. Hughton added: “We have to assess what we need. I don’t see a lot of players coming in through the window.” Which would be cheaper I wonder, agreeing a fee in January or letting a tribunal decide the compensation? Normally a tribunal will rule in favour of the selling club if they feel hard done by, but they can't really do this with Simpson considering they've been happy to let him out on loan for 3 years. Yeah I agree, always thought he looked OK in the middle. Had a superb game as part of a back three against Stoke too. Utterly awful whenever I saw him at fullback mind.
