Breaking News: Geordies Sign Georgian

By Craig Hope

NEWCASTLE United have completed a three-month loan deal for Blackburn Rovers defender Zurab Khizanishvili.

The 27-year-old, a strong and imposing 6ft 2ins centre-back, goes straight into the squad for Saturday's Championship clash against Plymouth Argyle at St.James' Park.

And boss Chris Hughton told nufc.co.uk: "Zurab is an experienced defender and we're very pleased to get him on board.

"He knows English football very well and will be a valuable addition to the squad over the coming months."

A Georgian international, he has been capped 62 times, Khizanishvili will follow in the footsteps of countryman Temuri Ketsbaia in pulling on the black-and-white stripes for the Geordies.

He started his career at hometown club Dinamo Tbilisi before joining city rivals FC Tbilisi and then Lokomotiv Tbilisi.

A move to Dundee followed in 2001 where he made 51 appearances for the SPL side.

His performances at Dens Park earned him a move to Glasgow Rangers in 2003.

After 63 outings Khizanishvili was on his travels once again, this time in the direction of Blackburn Rovers where, after a season-long loan, he joined for a fee of £500,000 in the summer of 2006.

He has been on the winning side every time he has appeared in a competitive match at St.James' Park, twice enjoying 1-0 victories with Rovers.

Although, alongside Peter Lovenrkands, he was part of the Rangers side which was beaten 4-2 by United in the NewcastleGateshead Cup at Gallowgate in the summer of 2004.

One of those Premier League players who I've heard of but never really noticed at all.

Not expecting a world beater but as long as he's competent, it's a welcome addition.

Oh no.

why do you say that? Nowt spectacular but he`ll do a decent job in the CCC. Plus he  can cover a couple of positions incl defensive midfield.

True!

Naaah, can be a good backup. Can play central defence, right back or as a holding midfielder.

Was aroung year 2000 regarded as a wonderkid and wanted by Arsenal..

Can't really complain.  Our main problem is at the other end of the field but we desperately lack bodies at the back as well so I guess it's not bad at all.

Exactly. One injury to Taylor or Collo and we're throwing in untried kids or playing people out of position. Common sense signing is this.
