Taken from another forum, summarisation of a talk-in with Beardsley from just before the Arsenal game. Make of it what you will, think some will have comments to make about his views on Ashley...

On Enrique

All knew he was going but no-one put a bid in until Liverpool's. He had been to see Pieters and also the Ajax left back and would be happy with either, however the club can't afford to have 2 first choice left backs so had to wait until Enrique went.

On Cabaye

Thinks he could be world class, was raving about him the whole time. Said he's not there yet but in 1 or 2 years in the Prem he will be up there as one of the best. Thought we got good money for Nolan

On Xisco

Great lad apparently, works well in training, however ask him to run 10 yards to help out the left back and he won't do it. That's why he's gone. Said at the time they were looking at Bojan and Xisco, and obviously picked the wrong one!

On Ranger

He's never met anyone so misplaced in his own belief in his ability. Said to watch him and see how many times he controls the ball with his studs, reckons top players will never do that. He can bully the resrves with his strength but any decent defender will be too clever for him. He has the wrong attitude, doesn't watch any football, has no idea who Peter Beardsley was as a player! He asked him who his favourite player was and he told Beardsley it was Andy Cole, Beardsley said he had never heard of him! He was going mad trying to explain to him that he must have heard of him as he was Newcastle no 9 once! Had no idea he had played alongside him!

Says if you watch him when he loses the ball, he sulks for 10 seconds before trying to chase it down, too late by then, the ball is gone.

On Best

Real student of the game, watches matches all the time, has really tried to influence Ranger into becoming more professional. Just not sure if he's quite got enough about him talent wise to fully make it in the Prem. Would love him to though, says he would deserve it for his work rate

On Ferguson

They are looking at him as a left back rather than a winger as he isn't strong enough and doesn't like taking the ball with his back to goal, prefers coming onto the ball which suits being a left back better.

On Vuckic

Good player, lots of potential, just needs games now as he has had his injury problems. trouble is he is below Ben Arfa in pecking order so will probabaly have to go out on loan.

On Barton

because he is available on a free transfer, he can talk to anyone and doesn't even have to let them know if he is coming to training or not. I'm guessing that was what Pardew was talking about when he was saying he wanted a commitment from him before he would pick him.

On Tiote

Reckons he'll get twice as many bookings this year as last year, can't help himself!

On Ashley

Will defend him to the hilt and has offered to come out in public and do so but has been told not to worry about it. Reckons he will be here for quite a while now, has really made a difference behind the scenes with the structures put in place, it will take 3-4 years for the club to see the benefit of it though. Beresford was there and he reckoned the club has been 5 years behind other clubs, incl the mackems and smogs with the Academy etc. Reckoned Paul Stretford was asking about Rob Lee's 13 yr old kid,(on the books at West Ham), apparently Fergie had seen him play whilst no one at NUFC knew a thing about him!

Found this on naver.com today. My Korean is really shoddy at the moment, so perhaps oldtype can explain why Arsene Wenger in briefs is significant.

http://imgnews.naver.com/image/360/2011/08/23/67_copy.jpg

It's comparing the summer spending of big clubs to fashion. The Wenger panel is a riff on "The Emperor's New Clothes"

He's saying "I've signed big stars. They just can't be seen by anyone stupid or incompetent."

I could attempt to explain the whole thing but really most of it wouldn't be funny if you're not Korean.

Sad to hear. Although I can't remember him doing that last point from Beardsley here.

Can't really understand the argument of him not being strong enough to be a winger, but strong enough to be a left back. And surely if he doesn't like taking the ball with his back to goal, he shouldn't be any where near our goal? Weird. Seen him play though, so wouldn't have any major worries with him playing left back, but odd arguments.

The might mean for Ferguson to be overlapping Jonas and taking the ball on from through balls at LB

...he's got qualities suited to [being a left back] at least, while he can perhaps still bring most of his attacking aspects into play as a supporting Wing Back. Personally, I think it's one of the most important positions in a team, particularly our team for years at least, so there's a fair bit to be said for making sure you've got a good and well-rounded one.

In contrast, you're arguably afforded more space and time at the back to use your brain to position yourself and be effective in defence than you are as a winger/forward who's potentially going be marked/closed down and hustled out of the game at his own business end if he's too weak to fight.

Basically in the long run he might just be a decent winger whereas he could be a very good wing back. I assume you've realised you got Beardsley wrong about the back to goal stuff, that he was on about controlling it in in an offensive sense (laying it off/creating space for himself etc.).

Thats a really good read, stuff about Ashley was interesting. Fascinating to know how much is true.

Is strength all that important these days as a full-back anyway? Most top wingers are the small nippy types where pace is more valuable. Lee Sharpe was a very good winger, but Sir Alex thought if he'd stuck it out as a left-back he could have been one of the world's best.
