The old Chris Hughton discussion thread

Never been his biggest fan, but also I wasn't one of those doom mongers Jon was referring to. He was excellent yesterday, got everything spot on, can't fault him at all. But to be fair, he's been bloody good for a long time now, I think he really grew into the manager's role around christmas time, long may it continue. Still the most boring interviewee in the world though :)

Only manager since SBR I've any time for, tbh.

This. Sort of.

I had moments with Roeder and Keegan is a no comment.

But I can't help but like Hughton, you know his hearts in the right place. I still find it mental that guy on the headset at Spurs is now our manager.

Hughton's Newcastle future in doubt as contract talks stall - Exclusive

Chris Hughton faces an uncertain future at Newcastle - despite steering the club back into the big time.

The former Spurs and Republic of Ireland assistant coach has excelled in the manager's chair at St James' Park following their relegation at the end of the 2008/9 season.

Having bounced back at the first attempt, Hughton has also maintained the feel-good factor with the club's stunning 6-0 demolition of Aston Villa - the Magpies' biggest Premier League win for 11 years.

Mirror Sport understands, however, that 51-year-old Hughton's current Newcastle deal runs only until the end of this current season.

Talks have already taken place over new deal but the two parties have failed to agree terms with the offer to Hughton believed to be unsatisfactory.

Newcastle have yet to come back with an improved offer since taking their original package off the table. It means Hughton's contract is set to run out at the end of this season.

It also means, despite turning around a club that was on its knees last season, Hughton's job could yet be up for grabs at the end of the current campaign should the current owners - or new owners if they decide to sell - go for a bigger name.

The London-born Irishman smashed his way back into the Premier League this summer by winning the Championship with Newcastle with 102 points and 90 goals.

The club had previously been left in turmoil following it's plunge through the relegation trapdoor with Alan Shearer at the helm.

Newcastle's return to the top flight is worth a minimum extra £30million a year for the club. Yet Hughton's biggest signings have arguably been those of Sol Campbell on a free and former Everton starlet Dan Gosling, also on a Bosman because of an administrative error.

No one from Newcastle was available for comment.

Owt to be worried about? The bit in bold made me laugh.

Would be a new low if we couldn't afford Hughton's wage demands.

Anyway, we'd be daft to give him a new contract yet in any case...

...then sack the useless twat a month later.

Why would it be daft to offer him a new contract if his current deal expires at the end of the season?  It would be pretty daft to wait until the end of year, especially if we stay up or have an unexpectedly good season.

He's not going anywhere unless we push him.

Well he's not exactly getting head hunted by Barca at the moment, but if he wins the Championship and keeps us up this season, he ends up in a really strong bargaining position in the summer.  And it wouldn't be inconceivable that other teams might be interested, especially if he's out of contract.

Isn't he only on something like £300k a year which is probably less than all of the players bar the kids?

I think they said that Hughes' package at Fulham is £2m although that might include his coaching staff.

However from Ashley's point of view, it would make sense to wait a few months to see how we do and then give him a rolling contract.

The London media seem to constantly imply that we are looking for a big name.  I hope that is just mischief-making on their part.

Ashley always seems very reluctant and/or slow to negotiate new contracts.

Rolling contract sounds good to me, I doubt he would be kicking off. I would be concerned who we might get if he did leave though.

Give him a rolling contract, see how he does over the next couple of seasons and if he is doing well given the squad he has (I think the signings he has made have been very good considering the budget) then if after that time he is doing as well as we could expect then we can look at a longer term contract.

Agree with this, the fact Mike Ashley hired Joe Kinnear is just as cringeworthy today as it was when he came in.
