Always a bit  sceptical about Man Utd stories in the Mail not written by Fergie confident Bob Cass.

This is by Joe Bernstein.

Michael Owen will be shown Manchester United door in summer as Sir Alex Ferguson looks for wage cuts

Sir Alex Ferguson will try to end Michael Owen's Manchester United career in the summer - after just one season.

Ferguson has decided Owen is surplus to requirements six months into a two-year deal after closely assessing his form in training over recent weeks.

The 30-year-old will be left as the club's seventh-choice striker if he stays, behind Wayne Rooney, Dimitar Berbatov, Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda, Mame Diouf and an anticipated new signing.

Debt-ridden United want to use the England striker's £50,000-a-week salary towards a new contract offer for Wayne Rooney that will keep him away from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Both Spanish giants are also ready to go head to head in a £16million battle for Nemanja Vidic, who plays his first game for United this year, against Arsenal today.

Ferguson's decision will be a huge blow to Owen - although not a surprise after the striker's inactivity in recent weeks.

Only two of his seven goals this season, after joining United on a free transfer last summer from Newcastle, have come in the Premier League - the last against Manchester City in September.

Being sidelined has also hit the England striker in the pocket, as he has missed out on thousands of pounds in bonuses for appearances.

Ferguson has already admitted Owen's options at United will be limited by Rooney's emergence as a genuine penalty-box striker this season.

Owen was not used at all in Wednesday's thrilling Carling Cup victory against Manchester City. And in a recent game against Birmingham City, Ferguson decided to send on Senegalese youngster Diouf ahead of Owen as United chased a winner.

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker Owen will miss out on the World Cup because of his inactivity at United, and the man crowned European Footballer of the Year in 2001 faces a major decision over his future at the end of this season.

Although still keen to play, he has become increasingly occupied by the multi-million pound horse-racing stable he owns in Cheshire.

Ferguson is likely to name Rooney as his lone attacker against Arsenal, with the in-form England striker supported by Antonio Valencia and Ryan Giggs. Vidic replaces the suspended Rio Ferdinand.

United to offload Michael Owen in the summer

Published 23:00 30/01/10 By Simon Mullock

Manchester United will look to offload Michael Owen at the end of the season.

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle striker has failed to impress since moving to Old Trafford on a free transfer in the summer.

And Sir Alex Ferguson will not stand in Owen’s way if he can find a club willing to offer him more playing opportunities.

Owen has scored just seven goals in 26 appearances for United, although he has made just 10 starts.

Ferguson has not been impressed enough to put his trust in Owen in the games that matter.

That hasn’t been lost on England coach Fabio Capello and Owen now seems certain to miss out on the World Cup.

United, meanwhile, have told Barcelona that defender Nemanja Vidic will cost them £18m.

Wouldn't surprise me if he retired. In his mind he's too good to lower himself to play for Stoke etc and if he doesn't make the WC squad this year (which he won't) there's basically no chance what so ever for him to make it into the EC qualifying squads let alone the EC squad itself if England were to make it. And if he can't play for England, well then me might just call it a day and take up his horse racing/owning thing more seriously.

Can't see him retiring after that season. Going away from ManU - yes, I even thought that he might look for a new club in January tbh but maybe he wants to win some trophies this season so he will stay till the end of the season.

After that I can see him going to a club where a manager works who still rates him from his previous days like Keegan (if he was ever to manage a club again, I seriously could see him coming in for Owen building a side like he once did with Man City with players like Seaman or McManamann) or someone who played with Owen and is a friend of him.

It always seemed a strange signing. I can only think that Fergie couldn't resist making a bold call on a player who'd been written off - getting it right when everyone else had got it wrong.

Or he just never watched any of our games of our last 4 seasons when Owen was either poor or not on the pitch.

To be fair the only people who'd written Owen off were us poor Newcastle fans who regularly saw how shit he was. The media and other club's fans thought Owen was only poor for Newcastle because Newcastle were shit. We were right and they were wrong.
