The action against Twitter has led to foreign media which is considered respected enough for a cite to run the story and name the player involved, which means the injunction and the affair allegations are now on his Wikipedia page, with those attempting to redact them as 'unsourced gossip' through talk pages and edit wars seemingly admitting defeat.

Sunday Mirror:

The sex-cheat footballer who is suing Twitter had turned himself into an international laughing stock by last night - named and ridiculed by defiant internet users around the world.

The shamed star's decision to take on the social networking site after posts named him as the 'family man' player who cheated on his wife with ex-Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas backfired in spectacular fashion. Even people who had never heard of him were lampooning the Premier League ace's farcical attempt to curb free speech.

Emma Davies, wife of Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin, wrote: 'Suing Twitter? Wouldn't it be a better idea to keep your head down!!' Celebs with huge followings also mocked him. TV host Piers Morgan tweeted: 'Get a new lawyer', while comedian Dom Joly told him to 'stop being a c**k'.

The flurry of messages made the star one of Twitter's hottest topics, known as 'trending', prompting scores of users to post: 'I can't Imogen why.' Thousands changed their profile picture to a snap of the star.

His lawyers went to court this week to try to force details from Twitter about users who blew his cover. But his efforts have been compared to the attempts by tyrants like Egypt's ousted president Hosni Mubarak to try to silence Twitter.

The farcical situation means that if the player - only referred to as CTB in legal documents - is selected for his team's match this afternoon, virtually the entire stadium will know his identity. Rival fans were openly using websites to co-ordinate chants about him at today's games. Media lawyer Mark Stephens said: 'By trying to stop the unstoppable tide of information as it flows through the internet, he has become the King Canute of football.'

Legal experts estimate the player has already spent around 228,037 on legal fees, but as everyone on Twitter can see trending topics, it means the site's 200 million global users now know his guilty secret.

Websites outside the UK not covered by the court gagging order joined in the mass scramble to embarrass him. US Forbes magazine named the player directly, as did popular US gossip website Gawker.

Twitter is based in San Francisco, effectively putting it out of the reach of British courts, in a country where the First Amendment enshrines the right to free speech. If he took action in California, he would be automatically named. Meanwhile on BBC Radio 4's Today programme a guest almost blurted out the player's first name.

The row started four weeks ago, when his six-month affair with 28-year-old Imogen was revealed along with the legal ban on naming him. The injunction allowed her to be named but not him. Former Miss Wales Imogen sobbed: 'My life is in pieces.'

The player is being represented by legal firm Schillings, whose partner Rod Christie-Miller said: 'The people who have been secretly and anonymously tweeting the details of these injunctions may find a knock on their door and they could be facing a long time in Pentonville (Jail).'

Legal sources now believe the injunction could be overturned within days. Last night Schillings said they were not suing Twitter but had applied 'to obtain limited information concerning the unlawful use of Twitter by a small number of individuals who may have breached a court order'.

This all seems like a really long and late April Fool's joke. To think the last moments of his career might be tarnished due how he's acted off the field, I can't work out if I should be laughing or facepalming.

Think Wullie has hit the nail on the head here, so long as the British press aren't allowed to hound him over the next 7 days, the eventual furore will have been worth it.

Imogen had a cameo in Dead Set. She seems nice. We filmed her looking scared during a zombie attack, crying. Gigs like that are quite rare.

I disagree, like every footballer who gets caught out there would have been a bit of chanting at matches etc, and he would have been called a bit of a cunt, but ultimately no-one would realy be that bothered. He would have been off the front pages/tele after a day or two and it would have just been 'another footballer shaggin about'. He looks an absolute pleb now though, and it's been dragged out right to the Champions League final.

Aye, this all would have blown over, but he keeps dragging it back up like a parody of that shitty meme we've got going on for old news.

I remember when Danny Behr shagged CTB @ OT and she said he had a 3" cock. You'd think with that effort he'd just keep it in his pants and make do with what his wife puts up with at home.
