NUFC transfer rumours in the press

Chronicle reporting we turned down the chance to sign Bassong or Beye.  Not sure if on loan or as permanent.

Both, or do they not know which?

Meant to say 'and'.  Bassong would have been decent.  Certainly would have helped cover LB issue as well.

A player like Bassong is just what we need

No worries, I thought it might just have been a journo being vague again.

I would have Bassong back for sure, but I think it might be awkward for him to rejoin his old team mates after deserting them for something better before and basically failing at Tottenham.

yeah - why should fans think about the expenses involved in running a club or the financial situation in which the club might be?  Just spend money and it'll work itself out I say.

Do you think that we might have kept our best players and added to them with the relatively modest amount we have spent so far ?

We might have been in danger of building a squad, and that would never do.

Indeed - would certainly be pushing for a slot alongside Colo if he could recapture his form, if not a definite starter.  And could cover Enrique.  No doubt Spurs would want about £10 million for him or something equally astronomical.

And his history with us would be a problem.  Someone who can play left back and centre back would be great though.

how dare a section of the fans show some sort of sense

Look, if you're happy to spend £600-1000 a season to watch a football team that is simply incidental to a transfer investement fund, then go ahead.

What is wrong with wanting to sign players because they are good to watch and not thinking about re-sale value. What does that matter to fans? We are not running the club so why do people take this Football Manager-like view, as if we pass on one player, the club will announce 'hey lads, we've saved a few bob, who should we get?'

The club will make decisions regardless of what we think (and has shown this consistently) so why should people get het up about finances? Can you not just look forward to the football?

It's fair enough if people don't rate Defoe, everyone can have an opinion on him as a player- but we shouldn't go around discounting players because we are unhappy with the impact on our free cash flow for the year. And nor does that mean anyone suggesting spending some money thinks that it all grows on trees and is disciple of Peter Ridsdale.

Sky Sports sources understand Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe would turn down a move to Newcastle if given the option.

The 28-year-old has been linked with a £10m transfer to the Magpies, who are still looking to replace Andy Carroll, who moved to Liverpool in January.

Manager Alan Pardew is thought to have made Defoe a summer target, and is also keen on Turkish forward Mevlut Erdinc, who could make the move to the North East by the end of the week.Defoe played 76 minutes of Spurs' friendly win over the MK Dons on Tuesday night and remains part of Harry Redknapp's plans for the new season.

There have been difficulties in finalising Erdinc's £7m move from PSG, although the transfer could be completed when Newcastle return from their tour of the USA on Thursday.

Defoe's strike partner, Peter Crouch, has also been a target for the Toon but Alan Pardew wasn't prepared to pay £9m for the 30-year-old.
