Reading the whole statement again after a few hours calming down, it doesn't seem that bad.

Yes, it's badly written and says some stuff they should have kept quiet, but the key points about bringing through young players and not spending beyond our means are things a lot of people have been looking for.

Have we had loads of kids that were good enough that we've let go like?

Of course we'd all prefer academy kids to make the grade, Like every club would.  We're all over the moon with Taylor, Carroll and Ameobi.  That's the sum total of what's come out of the academy in a decade though.  Not enough to keep us in the top flight.

Well we don't really know do we, and we've never managed youth well.

Jenas went to London because he didn't feel at home here, we signed Duff to replace N'Zogbia, Lua Lua has never had a chance, we sold the other Lua Lua too soon.

I'm not saying we've had loads of world-beaters, but if you don't sign many players then you have to allow the youth a chance... the likes of Kadar are the first example of that.

The clowns who pollute message boards and phone -ins with talk of mega signings and top six finishes certainly aren't representative of the real life' date=' common sense Newcastle supporters we know.[/b']

Can't say I've heard anyone suggesting a top six finish or mega signings.

From the biggest pair of self-important, opinionated clowns going that's some statement.

NUFC Statement

NEWCASTLE UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB

May 2010

First and foremost, the board of Newcastle United Football Club would like to thank its magnificent supporters who have played an instrumental role in pushing the club towards promotion in its first season in the Championship. This incredible achievement would not have been possible without the unshakable support of our fans, who have remained passionate and resolute in one of the club’s most difficult periods in recent history.

However, whilst celebrating winning the Football League Championship 2009-2010, we are still aware that the next season in the Barclays Premier League presents a challenge to all at the Club. Therefore, the club now feels that it is the best time to send a clear message to the supporters concerning both our plans for next season and way ahead for the future.

No-one at the club thinks that keeping us in the Premiership will be an easy task. However, everyone agrees that we have the best possible man for the job. The board would once again like to reaffirm its firm support for Chris Hughton, who will remain manager of Newcastle United Football Club next season and hopefully for the foreseeable future. Chris has done a brilliant job bringing unprecedented unity to the dressing room over the past season, and there is no better evidence than the results on the pitch to prove that he is the right man to take us forward.

Indeed, much of the credit for the success we enjoyed this season should be rightfully attributed to men like Chris, like Colin Calderwood, who has played an integral role as assistant manager, and like Alan Thompson, Paul Barron, and Joe Joyce, who have been involved with training and the academy. It is football men like these that have navigated our path towards promotion, and the board firmly believes that it is in the hands of football men that NUFC can be best placed. Therefore, there will be no comments from any member of Newcastle United’s Board in the future regarding any issues surrounding the club to the press and media at large. Everyday communication of footballing matters will be left to the manager and coaching staff, as is their prerogative. Considering the extent to which the national media has distorted the position of Newcastle United over the past decade, we believe that it is the best course of action for us to stay behind the scenes and simply ensure that he enjoys the best possible environment in which to do his job.

Such a policy extends to transfers, upon which the board can say without reservation that Chris holds final authority. However, we do believe that it is necessary for us to somewhat temper our expectations regarding the summer transfer market. Newcastle United is still in an extremely precarious financial position, with losses of over 70 million Pounds over the past two seasons. While the board recognizes the need to strengthen in the face of next year’s challenge, we also recognize the need to remain cognizant of our financial situation while doing so. Make no mistake, we will make every effort within reason to ensure that Chris Hughton has the players he needs to keep us in the Premiership next season. However, those players will be acquired through extensive scouting and meticulous negotiations, not by offering unsustainable wages to marquee players that the media so often erroneously links us with.

Make no mistake, the future of Newcastle United remains secure. We have set a five-year plan to maintain stability within the club, culminating in the year 2015, where we project being able to achieve a “break even” financial situation, giving us the strong foundations we need to push this club to the heights it deserves to be at. We also enjoy a footballing academy brimming with talent, skill, and dedication, from which we hope to welcome several graduates into the first team over the coming years. The quality of the academy will only be strengthened by our initiative to establish stronger ties with sources of regional talent, ensuring that the days when players such as Alan Shearer, Steve Bruce, Peter Beardsley and Michael Carrick had to leave Newcastle to begin their illustrious football careers elsewhere are over.

Newcastle United Football Club is an organisation that holds a special place in the hearts of Geordies worldwide and the Board understands that it is they who are the spiritual torch holders of Newcastle United Football Club. The Board has made this statement so that all those involved with Newcastle United can be aware of what the Board will strive to achieve over the next five years. Without you, promotion would not have been possible, and it is only with your trust and support that we will be able to continue forward.

Thank you,

Mike Ashley and the NUFC Board

That wasn't that hard was it?

It shocks me how whichever monkey that was paid to draft this statement managed to word it in the worst way humanly possible. Next time please get any reasonably educated college-graduate to proofread your s*** please.

Actually never mind, because if they stick to their word Thank God because there won't be a next time.

A strategy that will benefit us long term no doubt.

Youth team will lower the overall wages will be a massive plus.

We will be laughing in five years time when other clubs are i masses of debt.

This is taking into account we don't get relegated!

If we do.. guess we are F*****d, but no as much as if we did spend.

Categorically setting in stone a policy that you will not borrow £10m to avoid relegation and ensure a £20m return the following season is idiotic and if implemented fucks us over more than borrowing.

Where does the statement categorically rule out the purchase of any new plaers what so ever? If anything there are more indications suggesting we will buy players than we won't. Anyway, time will tell.

They haven't categorically ruled out the purchase of any new players, they have categorically ruled out "new capital outlay on players."  That means we're capable of bringing in players on loan or free transfers if they stick to what they've said.

Nice work - that is a very good effort at drafting the same message in a positive and sensible way. It's way too good for Ashley though. He has proven throughout his business career that he doesn't give a toss for PR.

The media are going to have a field day with this.  They see the supporters all riled up about the statement and now they can just publish shit-stirring non-sense and know they won't get a response from the club.  It's going to be a fun summer - at least we have the WC to distract us for a month or so.

regarding the "There is no plan for new capital outlay on players"

nufc.com reckon

One reader comments that "capital outlay is when cash is paid for an asset over a period of more than a year."

That's basically buying players on the never never as was the case previously, resulting in the situation where the club were still paying off instalments on transfers when the player(s) in question had actually moved on.

in feb 2009 Llambias said

Llambias said: “We are trying to get away from dating so that we don’t have huge amounts of money going out.

“We are trying to pay up front.

“People like Coloccini, Xisco and Gutierrez, which is just getting sorted out now – we own those players.

“It’s like buying a car on HP but then it gets written off, but you still have to pay it.

“That’s how the business was being run, they ran it on a credit.”

Yeah, just looked it up and that's exactly what capital outlay means. They're simply saying that they will only pay what they can afford at the time for players and won't use credit or payment plans. Fair enough, I suppose.

It's almost like Ashley does everything backwards.

Actually, upon reading this again, it's clear that there's been a huge amount of overreaction to what's written in this statement.

The main points:

- Hughton is manager for the season and they're not looking for anyone else.

- Only Hughton and his coaching staff will be available for interviews, and this should only relate to footballing matters.

- The board will not comment on transfers and will make agents sign privacy clauses to not discuss possible transfers with the media, so anything in the press about our transfers is a load of B.S.

- There will be transfers, but only those that can be paid up front.

- Our finances are not yet turned around, and our overdraft is maxed, meaning that anything over and above our operating costs is coming out of Ashley's pocket until that can be paid down, if ever.

- Ashley expects to see some return from investment in our youth program and wants Hughton to give some of the youth players a chance

I don't see what's so controversial about any of that.

That's your own interpretation, and a very optimistic one at that. Funny how virtually nobody else, including people on other websites and all of the media has understood it that way.

Hope you're right of course but I highly doubt it.
