The College Dropout Posted November 27, 2014 Share Posted November 27, 2014 Tbf though Alonso never really lost it due to ridiculous IQ, he'd struggle with Barca in their prime because Messi used to just consistently snap around his heels. But that aside his class shone through and continues to do so, can't say same for Lampard and Gerrard who have both had periods of looking finished. He's looked a tired and ageing footballer these last couple seasons imo. Mourinho in particular has a habit of running his central midfielders into the ground. Not to be misunderstood he still performed to a very high level and had some of his finest games in that period but especially in the league it looked like his legs had begin to go. Never the most athletic or even combative individual - he's one of the few CM's who has had to do MORE running, MORE defensive work into his 30's. Bayern is a great move for him. Lampard looked poor a lot of the time last season imo. At City he's back playing more of his natural game where last year he was having to sit more. If one of the centre backs breaks forward with the ball it's his responsibility to drop deeper and cover that. That's what he wants from those he plays as pivote. Moving around a football pitch is a lot easier when your team has possession. Bayern have significantly more possession - even in domestic competitions. He's had to do a lot of lateral defensive movement for Real. Often either playing a 3 man midfield of RDM - LM - XA, or a flat 2 with Modric in a 4-4-2.
